onewilyfool Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 One of our local stores has a great selection of Single malts. I enjoy trying the brands less common. The usual suspects of Glenlivit, and Glenfiddich, are easily available everywhere, but there are some nice small distillery singles I've been trying. One I like is Balvenie Double Wood 12 year old http://www.spiritsreview.com/reviews-scotch-balvenie-12.htm One of the best I tried was Macallan 25 year old.......very smooth.......hmmmmm http://www.sendliquor.com/id107600list35product.html And oddly enough, I become a better guitar player as I sip on the scotch, and it looks like people listening to me enjoy the music more.......
Deadgrateful Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 When I used to work in a wine shop, we had no central heating and in the winter the boss would crack open a bottle of Taliskar every few days to help warm us up. I normally drink Black label though... I find the taste more complex than a single malt.
albertjohn Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 I haven't drank whisky for about 30 years but my Dad's favourite is Macallan.
freak show Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 In order to answer your question, I would first need to try them all. Unfortunately I haven't done that yet, but my favorites are the Islay Whiskeys. I love the torf taste. Lagavulin, Ardbeg, etc....
albertjohn Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Bushmills "Blackbush". Neither a Scotch nor a single malt(?) but worthy of mention.
Lefty Guy Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 This is the one that most floats my boat... http://www.laphroaig.com/
Jinder Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 When I was a boozehound I'd occasionally treat myself to a bottle of Talisker...best single malt known to man...well, this man anyway! I sampled the lot over the years, and nothing pleased me more than the woodsmokesque nose and mean, peppery bloom to the taste. If Talisker was a song, it'd be something by Steely Dan...one of their austere, similarly peppery ballads.
milod Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Anything from Islay, I think. I like the super-peaty taste of Laphroaig. But then, where I live there ain't the options summa you folks have. The Speysides just don't have the flavor... <grin> Again, an old man's taste buds. I prefer an ounce of something I reeeeally like to a gallon of "okay." m

When we went to US recently for that orrible birthday I just had my kids surprised and delighted me on the plane by haviung me presented with a bottle of Talisker 57. That stuff is like nectar. Love the Steely Dan ananlogy couldn't be more apt
Flight959 Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 Being Scottish I used to love my Whiskey! Had way to much one night a few years ago and didnt feel right for about two weeks after... I cant even smell it now... Makes me feel sick....
milod Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 flight959 Had that happen at age 18 with a Canadian style whisky. Can't stand the smell of it now. How 'bout a good brandy? m
Eddie Rondack Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 Not the British Isle and not Scotch, but the best whisky from "over there", in my book, is Jameson's Irish!
boozeball Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 The problem with a 12 year old scotch is finding a 12 year old can of Mountain Dew to mix it with.
nodehopper Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 The problem with a 12 year old scotch is finding a 12 year old can of Mountain Dew to mix it with. +1, LOL
fortyearspickn Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 I guess our tastes in whiskies change as they do in guitars. I use to prefer scotch, but drank it with grapefruit juice in my salad days. Then I realized it was much better in smaller quantities but neat. One day I tried tequila and thought it was like drinking... well something nasty. Eventually, I came to prefer tequila. Of course, as with single malt - 100% agave aged tequila is a treat when neat.
milod Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 I'll definitely agree about one's tastes changing as one ages. Frankly I think in ways that even includes one's taste in guitars, if not music in general - although my current "main" guitars are mostly things from the mid 1970s and music is generally that of the 1930s through the 60s excepting some earlier material. Mostly, but not all, of course. m
whis4ey Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 When I was drinking whiskey (with an 'e' if it is Irish, and without the 'e' if it is Scotch) my everyday fav was Johnny Walker Black Label ( a bottle a week) To that I added quite a few single malt ... Dalwhinnie or Craiganmore were by far the most acceptable at that time The only bottle of single malt whisky that I ever gave away was a bottle of Laphroig from Islay ... that peaty taste was not to my own taste at all (and all of the Islay malts taste the same ..... I got very drunk on the island in the Golf Club one evening sampling quite a few :D) Bushmills Black Label is also quite a treat, especially in a special Irish Coffee :) Anyways ..... the doctor decided that I should give up on the whisk/eys many years ago and nowadays I desist ...........
