Maccadude33 Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 I've been fixing to get a Les Paul for quite some time now, and last Sunday I tried out one of those faded cherry Studio models at GC. First off, those things are absolutely gorgeous. Extremely comfortable, a lot more to my liking without the gloss too. Put simply, I think I'm dead set on picking one up soon, as the bang for the buck seems too good to pass up. But, with my luck, I forgot to ask about a case. Simple question, I know, but do the newest models include a hardshell? Online listings indicate that the faded models come with gig bags and not a hard case, but I vaguely remember reading old forums here and there saying otherwise. I've only seen them with a hardshell as well. That said I'm still going for it regardless, but it would be nice to not have to shell out extra (I'm on a low-enough budget as it is!). Thanks for all feedback. -MD33 As a side note, my good friend and mentor has one of these and told me about the faded Studios' lack of a (thicker) finish allows for easy discoloration and nicks with use. Anything else I need to take into consideration?
SakoHunter Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 I just bought a used worn brown studio from GC and it came with a hard shell case...forgot to ask them if that was standard. Yeah, the Gibson website says gig bag but they have been known to be wrong on their descriptions. I have heard that the worn/faded finishes do tend to show dings and scratches more easily but then again it is a "worn/faded" guitar..........
Flight959 Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 This seems to be up in the air now... If it was me I'd expect a hard case... I bought a Studio last year and it came in a hard shell case.... It seems Gibson have changed whats included with the guitar... Best bet would be to contact Customer Services.... Or ask the dealer where your buying from...... Good chance it will a guitar from last year when they came with hard cases so therefore thats what I would expect.. Regards
tom brown Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 i think musicians so called friend says the worn studios come with a gig bag style case and the ones with the finish, 400 more, have the hard shell case....i have the faded cherry with the bb pro and i really like it..the faded now comes with the 490 pickups which also work well...........
Maccadude33 Posted May 22, 2010 Author Posted May 22, 2010 Well I'd hope you guys are right. It's such a nice guitar that it seems like it'd be a waste if it didn't have one. Looks like the official Gibson spec page says gig bag too... That's bothersome. Granted if I could, I would have considered one of the heritage cherry bursts but unfortunately that's bit out of my range. Now I did see that there's a new 50's tribute Studio model coming out soon, but apparently those aren't shipping for a few months and don't come with a hardshell either. Great. Hopefully when I get down to Guitar Center they'll help me out a bit with this. They've always been pretty good about things for me. Those cases are what, $179? A bit hard to stomach at the moment, ha. I'll keep this updated if I'm able to swing by the shop today or tomorrow.
SakoHunter Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 GC has always found a way to sweeten the pot for me. Good luck and let us know!
Maccadude33 Posted May 23, 2010 Author Posted May 23, 2010 So I got it. Let me just say, this thing is absolutely beautiful. The feel of the guitar is great and playability couldn't be better. It's just so comfortable. After jamming to a few Beatles' tunes at the store, I knew I was sold; those Burstbucker Pros are incredibly clear and crisp to me. And it DID come with a hardshell, thank goodness, so I'm extremely pleased with getting such a great deal. It was kind of a funny story when I was trying to buy it yesterday. I went to the closer of the 2 Guitar Centers close to my home, where I had looked at these before. Apparently when I got there, the only models they had were the 2 display units on the rack, which was fine with me, but then we found that none of them, along with at least half of the guitars on the wall, had any switch knobs. We couldn't find any that fit on it either. The sales rep really wanted me to buy into it anyway, offering a meager $10 discount, but I had to pass on that. Kinda pointless to buy it without all the pieces. -.- Drove all the way over to the other GC (which is bigger and better than the other in almost every regard) and sure enough, they happened to have one in the back sealed up. A great salesman pulled it out and that was it! Definitely one of the best decisions I've made so far this year. Now I'm wondering how hooked I'm going to be... can't be too good of a thing, because then I'm going to want to shell out for a Standard... oh boy. ;)
gizeh68 Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 I got a HS case with my faded cherry studio at GC. I was going to get one at my local mom and pop music store but they were all out. If i had, it would have come with a gig bag and I'd have to pay an extra $100 for a non-gibby HS case. GC are getting them shipped directly from Tennessee with cases included. Mine was new in box with the case, factory sealed.
Maccadude33 Posted May 23, 2010 Author Posted May 23, 2010 Yeah that seems to have been the deal. Here's a quick shot of it for everyone: :D
Yaff Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 Congratulations, they are fantastic LP`s and represent exceptional value, when you consider the rest of the Gibson LP range. I purchased my Studio worn brown when buying new strings for my Strat. When I spotted the price, I decided to give it a play and ended up walking out with it. 6 months later, I bought my 08 Standard !! My Studio is a absolute pleasure to play and inspired me to play every night since, but I also felt the need for a Heritage Cherry Sunburst with the maple top. "because then I'm going to want to shell out for a Standard... oh boy. ;)", enjoy :-
Maccadude33 Posted May 23, 2010 Author Posted May 23, 2010 Ha thanks. Hopefully I'll be able to get my bandmates together and we'll play some shows, rack up some cash for a couple more. It'd be great to get one of those hollowbodies Gibson makes, or a high-end Casino, but I'm thinking my next project will be something along the lines of a Gretsch Falcon. Nothing like 'em.
Brodie Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Congrats on the Studio Faded. I picked up a 2010 Brown Studio Faded a few months back and absolutely love it. even messing around unplugged it sounds great, plugged in, sounds amazing. Unfortunately I only got the gig bag like is stated on Gibson site but no bother, I wanted a Gator case instead. Starting to get some 'fading' from play wear on the top of the body, it's going to age very nicely[biggrin]
jmjohnson Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Cool - nothing like finding one "new in box" to make the whole purchase experience that much sweeter!
Riffster Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 The price on these faded models has fluctuated from $799 to $999 over the last few years and it seems the gigbag vs case has changed based on the price fluctuation. Mine came with a case back in 2005 but the price then was $899 and faded brown was only available at GC and nowhere else.

Anything else I need to take into consideration?[/quote'] I just bought a worn brown Les Paul and sad to say right out of the box it has a gig bag. I rejected the bag and bought a no name hardshell case. I won't pay for a gibson case.
Maccadude33 Posted May 24, 2010 Author Posted May 24, 2010 @Brodie, leewaun: That's what I was afraid of. Good thing the GC guys here sell them with the cases, since I definitely wouldn't have paid for it separately. I have yet to get accustomed to it's unplugged tones but they're pretty good so far. Hopefully I'll manage to get them to project out more than my Peavey Tele, which sounds pretty good without an amp itself. Too bad the LP puts it to shame when hooked up. I was considering buying some P90s for it but since I was already edging myself into the market, I'll have to put that off. I can't stop staring at this thing. The mahogany body is just so nice. I'm wondering how long the euphoria is going to last, since I'm thinking about it more than I'm playing it. Guess I'm taking to it pretty well.
Brodie Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 I think mine looks better every day, haha. As for hard-case, well for me I not a big fan of walking around with 'Gibson' written across my case, just free advertising for thieves in my mind. Plus I like the brown Gator deluxe LP case way more so I wasn't too concerned. I imagine that a lot of people get them with hardcases just because dude at the store didn't know any better so a bonus for you.
Beatles1909 Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Hi Everyone, speaking of Gibson Les Paul Studio's I am looking for opinions! I have a lefty 1987 wine Les Paul Studio (which came with a plastic hard case with Gibson on it) plays great & is in VG condition. I was thinkin' of trading it in towards the Epiphone Cherry Sunburst Les Paul Standard plustop. I like the looks of the epiphone standard so it is only for cosmetic reasons I was thinking of trading it in. What do guys think I should do?
Maccadude33 Posted May 25, 2010 Author Posted May 25, 2010 Hi Everyone' date='I like the looks of the epiphone standard so it is only for cosmetic reasons I was thinking of trading it in. [/quote'] Hmm... while I think it's important to like the look of a guitar, I'd think you'd be trading down to the Epiphone if you already have the Gibson. You could be able to switch out the electronics on the Epi to make it play more like or even better than the Studio, as my former mentor once told me, but I think that's really just a personal preference. To some folks they sound quite similar either way. I think they do sound nice to a degree; I just played in an orchestral concert with some friends and one of the guys I know brought his out for a Muse cover with one of the groups. Not bad at all. But again, you already have the Gibson; as you can I've had mine a short while but already I'm hooked on it. I wouldn't trade it. And besides, if you're gonna switch to an Epiphone, why not a Casino?
Eracer_Team Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 as far as I have read... Epip's don't have as thick of maple cap as Gibson's.. So you will hear a bit of tone change Although 3/4" maple vs 1" maple.. your ear milage will vary.
Beatles1909 Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 thanks Maccadude33 & Eracer_Team, for your opinions! Eracer_Team: I tried the Epi out today & to be honest couldn't hear any difference nor did it feel any lighter then the Gibby Studio, I did notice however the Epi didn't have any hum like the Gibby did (very faint mind you!) Maccadude33: I have an epi 335 dot & sg g400 & (Gretsch 6122 - this is a lifer for me) so I'm not interested in the Casino. I've got to have something with Les Paul's name on it :-) I never really got attached to my studio, as to me it was always missing something, (only in the looks dept. though) I know I 'm trading down, but I do prefer the looks of the epi. Any way, I went to see what kind of deal I could get & ended up with the Epiphone Les Paul Standard plustop cherry sunburst on straight trade (lefty only comes in Black & Cherry) but I had to buy a case $72.99 to show money going in the till.
Maccadude33 Posted May 26, 2010 Author Posted May 26, 2010 Congrats, and a 6122? Nice. Early on I was heading for the 5120 models until I realized that they don't make those in the dark red finish any more. That, and then I found what I got now. Hope it treats you well.

chase1410 Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 why?..epiphone cosmetics vs gibson cosmetics..?..thats a no brainer I have both and my epiphone just sits in the corner...
