meanstreak
The Gibson fund currently stands at $1700 but I'm feeling weak and wanting to buy the new Epiphone Masterbuilt DR-500MCE cutaway A/E for $600! Talk me out of it and back into waiting until I have the cash saved for the Gibson Hummingbird I've always dreamed about!!
Buc McMaster
Hang tough! You already own three....yes three!.....Epiphones! Bite down hard and hold them dollars a bit longer!
CAMELEYE
Take a deep breath and go look at pictures of Gibson's fabulous Hummingbirds!
Gilliangirl
No no no no no, Meanstreak! You've already got 3 Epis, you don't need 4. If you are pining for that one Masterbuilt in particular, then find a place that will rent it to you for a week or so. But save that money for your dream guitar. I double-guarantee you, if you buy that Epi instead of your Gibby Hummer you'll regret it eventually.
DonCarlos
I shared that same dilemma when I almost pulled the trigger on a Masterbilt AJ500RE. It sounded so good and the price was great. But I went to the Gibson after my wife said "You should just get a Gibson and then you will not struggle with the issue of..... Did you buy the best guitar or not?" She was right. After buying the J45 I happened in to the same guitar store a few months later and played the Masterbilt again. There was no comparison at all in the feel and the sound of the guitars. Gibson was the right choice. And now I do not sit around wondering when it is time to get a better guitar......because this is the better guitar. Masterbilt are the best of most modern Epiphones, but they really do not compare with a Gibson. IMHO. Plus if your wife ever tells you to spend more money on something.....You know, you just have to do that. You just do. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do. meanstreak
AAHHHH!!!! After reading Buc McMaster, Cameleye, Gilliangirl and DonCarlos' posts I was feeling so strong and able to withstand the Masterbilt onslaught (Epiphone email's me like 10 times a week!) I even swallowed a bottle of Gas-X as recommended by Big Kahune! But then that evil (Darth) BKHarmony had to post up telling me to buy the Masterbilt! * typing www.musiciansfriend.com * WHEW! The glossy vintage sunburst isn't available yet......crisis averted! Maybe I'll just tell the wife to buy it for my birthday next month....in the meantime maybe I'll be satisfied with a set of Colosi bridge pins for my Epi H-Bird... Andre S
You have $1700 saved up. You're too close to getting a Gibson to buy an Epi. Hang on for the Gibson... Imagine how yoú will feel when you look at a Gibson Hummingbird, with a Masterbuilt Epi nearby. The beauty of the perfect dreadnought shape with care and detail in every corner of the instrument... You will have some regret for coming so far and then buying an Epiphone. Only A Gibson is Good Enough. Plus if you buy the Epiphone, then you will be even further away from the HummingBird. meanstreak
Ya you guys are right! I have always dreamed of buying a brand new Gibby Hummingbird Modern Classic. Gonna need another $1500 and I'm there! Although these two are tugging at my soul right this minute! http://cgi.ebay.com/Gibson-Hummingbird-Pro-Acoustic-Cutaway-Fishman-Preamp-/180516714234?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Guitar&hash=item2a07a276fa http://cgi.ebay.com/Gibson-Hummingbird-Custom-Shop-Quilt-/130398658377?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Guitar&hash=item1e5c5d9f49
Jack6849
The Hummingbird is closer than you think, Luke (I mean meanstreak) ..... Feel the Force..... the Gibson is close..... the ideal is almost a reality..... think of it..... you know it's right..... the Gibson is your true destiny..... once achieved..... a musical milestone is attained, perhaps forever..... better than you can imagine it is..... (and if you're like most of us), you can imagine a lot. May the Force be with you..... Almost to your goal you are..... Good luck, Jack6849
Guth
If you're serious, then here are a couple of thoughts. 1.) Pick out a new tune or technique to learn and work on that with your current crop of guitars. If you nail that, pick something else and repeat this process until you've saved enough and and found the guitar you've been wanting. Then you'll have that much more to bring to the party with the new guitar. 2.) Stay away from guitar forums. Honestly, nothing drives a person to desire something they don't have like an Internet forum. This will leave you with more time to focus on point 1 above. Which in turn will further increase your enjoyment when finally playing the guitar that you really wanted and managed to hold out for. All the best, Guth

wonderful remark
I've owned very many epiphones... IMO, ten epiphones < one Gibson...
gregory_james
seriously. sell a couple epiphones, cut back on some extra curricular activities (beer, booze, pot, starbucks, name your poison), add that to the $1700 and get yourself a mighty fine Gibson. Then at $3k start looking at vintage options... lol. edit: nevermind about vintage... good grief, never realized vintage hummingbirds were so pricey. makes an early 50's J-45 seem like a bargain! g

SGSpecialguy
why not pick one of those used ones you showed us there ? No need to buy new and pay full retail price unless you wanna walk into a store and play it before you buy it ,, which is typically what I like to do especially for an acoustic,, but man, paying $3,000.00 reatil is hard to swallow

MissouriPicker
Yes, definitly wait until you can get the "bird." No disrespect meant for Epi's. They are fine guitars in their own right, but none of them are "birds." Not even the Epi Hummingbird.........My Gibby bird is perhaps the sweetest guitar I've ever owned, and I've owned a few. Is it the loudest? No. That goes to my J150, followed closely by the HD28. But, it is the most mellow and warm sounding guitar I've owned. Very, very easy to play. Like fretting the chords on an electric guitar. A joy to fingerpick. You know, we all have our own opinions and expectations----and in my view, this guitar is everything I expected and wanted it to be. Plus, it looks great. ....Wait and get what you really want. You will be glad you did.
lespaulj45
save your money and buy a J-45 from Gibson-it is a remarkable guitar-there is a reason why they have been making this instrument since 1942-everytime I take it out of the case to play it amazes me with its tone and clarity
