Toxic smelling new J-45 case

Hi, first post,

I have a 1986 J-30 I bought used, and upgraded the bad case it came with a new J-45 case I ordered on line. It came yesterday, so I opened it up and the chemical smell kind of knocked me over, so I put it outside, then in the sun, then sprayed it with lysol, and none of that did anything at all. After that I put it in a room with a living air ozone air purifier blowing on it for 14 hours. Still smells like a chemical with cheap perfume added. I can't put my guitar in it in fear of it stinking it up. I'm not even sure it's safe to keep in the house. Anybody go through this? Thanks,

Frank

I bought a brand new case for a Gretsch. Made in Canada. Putrid. I mean it smelled like someone stepped on a bloated skunk carcass in their stocking feet and then threw them in the case. Emails to the seller got me nowhere. "Nobody has ever complained before" (so therefore my complaint was invalid). I tried all the standard methods including sprinkling about a cup of (unbrewed) coffee grounds in there and letting it sit, which normally will absorb just about anything.... all to no avail.

I gave up and stuck it on ebay with the caveat it smelled like the north end of a south bound horse that had been eating asparagus and drinking milk. The guy bought it and said he didn't notice any smell.

So maybe I am crazy....

I bought a Gibson J-45 case about a month ago! It had the smell you describe. The smell is pretty much gone now!

I think, the smell is caused from the glue they use???

I put my J-45 in from day one with no adverse odor, being transferred to the guitar!

The smell will likely dissapate over the next few days or so. FWIW, I had great success with baking soda in a case once but it was more of a cat or dog type smell. The glue is out-gassing would be my guess. Do you know what country the case was made in? I would guess Mexico or China.....

Thanks all,

It's good to know that others have gone through this before me. The drying glue sounds about right, and it was made in canada. Just glad to know I don't have to return it. You get a new toy, and you can't even play with it.

yep, been there. I bought a case made in Canada; same thing. They are nice cases, but the smell :-k ? It's the glue off-gassing.

Don't close the lid. Air it out for a week or two or as long as it takes, leave it outside as much as possible. It will go away. I wouldn't put Lysol of anything like that on it. Kind of like putting cologne over B.O. just makes it worse.

It's been open airing out, and it's getting better. It's a pity they can't air them out before shiping. Thanks,

What they should really do is use different glue. They don't all smell like that.

Right! I have a recording king banjo and eastman mando that arrived with no case smell at all. I had to put the gibson case in the garage in front of the open walk through door, but it's getting much better! Maybe the stinky glue is cheaper, or holds better.

Speaking of glue, sorry to say I just noticed a two inch area close to the handle that has separated a bit. You can push it in, and looks like the glue didn't stick. I can live with it, but it might separate more later. Anyone else run in to this? I got it from a cheap site. Don't know if it makes a difference.

A little superglue should take care of that.

Ed,

The 2in. spot is like a very shallow bubble. I would have to slice it down the center, and then shove some glue in both sides of the bubble and hope the cut doesn't show afterwords.

It's a combination of the glue thats used and acetone ( the cleaner). It'll be gone in a few days.

I doubt very seriously that the glue has an acetone solvent base as acetone is a primary ingredient in lacquer thinner and will soften lacquer finishes. Using acetone based glue in a guitar case meant for a lacquered guitar would be a very bad mistake. When the glue off-gassed the acetone into the sealed case with the guitar inside, the result could possibly be a softened nitro finish. Just saying!

FWIW, we received a new Custom Shop Gibson case last month and it was pretty stinky too. (Smelled very much like a Martin case for one of their 'up-line' models that I had a few years back.)

Anyway, the case was not one of the Canadian-made TKLs; it was a US-made case. I cannot recall made where or by whom, but it was American-made.

Fortunately it didn't fit, so back it went to be replaced, hopefully with a non-stinky case.

What kind of case is it' date=' exactly? I bought a Golden Gate-branded case for my J-45 (Chinese, not Canadian), and it had no smell or separation. It is a bit snug, but it fits.[/quote']

As far as what kind of case is concerned, the only tag I found inside said made in canada. The fit is a bit snug. Besides the bubble where the glue didn't stick, there are a few black globs on the edge of the case that if you pic them off, it might not look very good. I'm just not sure how these cases are comming through these days. The gibson cases i've had in the past have been perfect. I emailed the on line place that I ordered it from (m. 123) and got no responce. I will probably return it.

The auto parts store has spray-on upholstery adhesive. It's used to stick fabric to cardboard for the ceiling of your car as well as door panels. You'll have to separate the fabric all the way to the edge to get the glue in there.

Speaking of smells, I was driving on I-90 East out of Seattle this morning, around North Bend, when the air suddenly took on a sweetish sick aroma that I would have liked to have gagged at ...

Turns out some lady had just hit some kind of animal. looked like a horse, that was still lying on the hiway, with blood running in rivulets down the hill.

Smell went away as soon as I got east of it.

I do repairs for a local pawn shop and last week my wife came home from there with a repair. There was also a bonus freebie, a big honkin' Yamaha keyboard with the LCD screen and all kinds of whizbangs. Must have been 4 feet long. A couple keys didn't work and the little circuit board that held the pitch bender was cracked and floppy. I know nothing about keyboards but figured I'd tinker on it. If I could get it running in an hour and then flip it for fifty bucks then it would be all good.

I removed about 460 screws to split the upper and lower halves. Once I opened it up, my breath was stopped short immediately. Cat pee. No trace of odor before I uncapped it but as soon as air hit the inside...... phew.

To the junkyard it goes....
