JThunderz
So I've been lurking and posting here for a while now, and in a weird way I feel like I know some of you guys. But the weird thing is, I have a feeling for what kind of guitars you guys like, what kind of sound, amp, etc. etc....But I'm really not sure what you guys play! So how about it? Let's do a thread explaining our relationship to our guitars- How long have you played, are you in a band/ do solo performances, have you been in bands but aren't now, and MOST importantly, What Do You Play? If there is a song that could sum up what you do/are trying to do, what song would that be? What do you think guys? Any other relevant info/questions? Brought up listening to 'Classical' (mainly Baroque and Romantic-period - Dad believed "Music Died with the passing of Beethoven in 1827") music from birth. Was exposed to Jimi Hendrix when I was 11. Started my interest in guitar in '73 after seeing footage of Paul Kossoff playing at the 1970 'Isle of Wight' festival. Got first electric '76. Formed first 'band' two months later. We were really crap! Our play-list went from Muddy Waters to the Sex Pistols by way of Dire Straits and JJ Cale!. Eclectic! First 'real' electric guitar (1964 Lake Placid Blue Strat) in '79. Bought present amp (Music Man 2x12 combo) 1980. PLayed lots of stuff from Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters etc... and scored some gigs. Bought first Gibson (mid-'70s Les Paul Custom, CSB) 1982. Traded it two weeks later...(unluckily it was a crap example of a 'Norlin'). Bought and sold loads of Fenders and some Gibsons over the next 20-odd years. 24 years after I bought it I sell my Pre-CBS Strat. Found my R0 and a few 'LP friends' of hers that I have to this day. Have others but they don't really get much play-time. Don't play in public with a very few choice exceptions; RogerGLewis' party last October being the last time. Nowadays I enjoy playing mainly 'British Blues Boom' stuff; the 'Beano'; 'English Rose' and so on with classic stuff like BB King thrown in to the pot. Favourite track to play with a band; 'Steppin' Out' from the 'Beano'. Favourite to play unaccompanied; 'Jigsaw Puzzle Blues'. I'd like to play it wth a band but no-one I know knows how the rest of it goes!
JThunderz
Nice questions' date=' JThunderz. I'll bite. [/quote'] Awesome! Judging from your avatar I always pictured you as a four-year old girl who was classically trained as a mandolinist! J/K! Seriously though- that's exactly what I'm looking for. It helps to put your posts in perspective for me. Now, if anybody else is willing to devote 10 minutes on some background... time will tell! Blackie
You should have asked this in the Lounge.....unless you don't like SG's or any of the other Gibson models. You can hear my stuff at the link.
Dub-T-123
I've been playing for about 5 years. I got my SG in '07. It's my first and only "real" guitar. Got my first real amp about 6 months ago which is my ac30. I am currently in a band. It is my second band. My first band was a 3 piece stoner garage jam band. We just improvised everything. Sometimes we were pretty successful at it and we recorded about 15 songs with about 3 decent songs. My current band is another 3 piece but were more structured and seasoned now. We actually write songs and play them more than once now. We haven't recorded or gigged yet but were ready to do both. I guess I should explain our genre. Were pretty experimental. Our main influences are bands like Radiohead, Pinback, Mogwai, Pink Floyd.... Basically things like that. We listen to everything though. Those are just some bands that I think sum up our style pretty well although we certainly have our own flavor. We have drums, guitar (usually two), bass, and keys (specifically a '70s Moog Prodigy). We don't really use effects on our guitars but we do some crazy stuff with the Moog and we love to mess with delay on the Moog. We play a lot of chords that we make up. Were not a power chord rock band. We like to have songs that go from really mellow to really heavy. If not heavy maybe intense. Mainly we just like to mess with stuff to see what sounds we can make. Sometimes we'll just play a 2 hour improvised jam. Not much "soloing" per se but a lot of instrumental stuff.
Josh James
Cool question as I have wondered this myself about all of you! I started playing when I was 8, inspired by The Beatles and "The Boss". I used to be mainly a acoustic singer/songwriter ,you can check out my stuff here www.myspace.com/JoshJamesgtr or just type "Josh James" into iTunes. Now I have moved away from playing my trusty Taylor and started a classic rock cover band. My main influences as far as electric are Clapton, Leslie West, George Harrison etc. J

Started playing in 1993 when I was 12. Parted ways with my most recent band in March cuz it was not my style and I had no intentions of staying with them long term. I decided I am no longer settling as far as that goes. I wanted exposure but I was no longer willing to play radio friendly, college rock-esque rip offs of Skynard or Black Crows so we parted ways. I am a metal head to the core and I always will be. Melodic death/celtic/folk/progressive is what I learn towards in my playing style. I love Metallica more than any other band. dokosan
Just started to play about 2 years ago in my tender mid-fourties. I love music and its such a thrill to be able to poorly reproduce some great songs. I was really lucky and connected with a great teacher who shares my musical taste. My focus is mainly alternative with some metal and classic rock thrown in for good measure. Lots of Nirvana, Cure, Green Day; some Metallica, Sabbath, Rush. Finally at the stage where I can play OK and even sing one or two songs. Occasionally get together with a friend who has been playing forever. That is a lot of fun when we nail a song. There is a new music store on Long Island that has weekly blues jam and while that is not my taste, I may check it out to get more experience. Must say as a fan of Hello Kitty, I'm a bit jealous of Mojo's guitar. It screams Norwegian Death Metal. Rock on, Ms. Kitty.

Hence the silliness of it being lime green etc.
pohatu771
I play your standard folk-rock/singer-songwriter sort of stuff, just like you'll find everywhere from Nashville to Los Angeles. I perform solo, usually, with just me and the J-45, Martin, or a piano, but really like the opportunities when I get to use the whole band. Right now I'm working in the studio on a record, multi-tracking everything. I've been considering a few people to ask to join up as my part-time band, but I prefer to record alone. You would never know it from listening to my own music, but "Layla" may very well be the reason I do what I do. I actually got into college because of an essay I wrote to that effect. BigKahune
I started out playing accordion in the 60s (ouch). Then I picked up sax and stuck with that for eight years, playing in a group for a while and then doing stand-ins. Meanwhile my brother had got a strat knockoff and I was snagging time on it here and there. I bought a Harmony Stella I played with for a couple years. Next was a Japanese Epi 12. And then in the 70s when I was attending MSU in East Lansing, I found this little shop just opened up by a guy named Stan Werbin called Elderly Instruments (love that place, so I give it plug, no affiliation). Bought my first Gibson there - a 65 Melody Maker double cut that came with a Gibson Amp, one of those tweed jobs with tremolo and reverb. I played in a couple bands - jazz combo with the sax, and rock with my Gibby. I also did some solo standins for some of my buddies with my 12string - in those days, there was a proliferation of small restaurant/bars that all seemed to have live folk/rock or jazz entertainment, mostly solo, duet and threesome - the bigger dance bars played rock bands. I built up a collection of instruments during that decade - guitars, keyboards. By the 80s I was into a "regular" job, got off the sax and away from paid gigs. I still play a lot, and collect, although I try to keep the total number of instruments to a resonable number. Every once in a while I sell off some and buy some more. I have a couple of friends that still gig. I haven't got back into it, but we get together once in a while to jam. Man, there's nothing like playing/jamming with a group, when everyone is on and you can feel the tight cohesive roll.
Thundergod
Started playing acoustic, then hard rock (and decided to get an electric) and then moved to heavy metal. 10 years ago I started playing everything else. I now play a little of everything, make a living out of recording and teaching so I practically HAVE TO know about lotsa styles.

summerman
Started playing in Law School. Had a friend and watched him go from "get that guitar out a hear your hurting my ears to wow! can you play this too?" Played a cheap classical a teacher left at my parents house 10 years earlier , then bought a well made hondo at a store, it was the best made one in the $350 range, 1986 or so, still have it. Then I was looking at a fender catalog dreaming of an electric in my apartment and a buddy I hadn't seen in years pulls in and sees the cataloge and tells me he has Tele in his trunk he was given but doesn't play. It was a black amercan tele. Bought it. Got a Cube 30 amp and headphones. Then after ton's of looking on internet, forums.... i ebayed a G&L legacy... Then a client owed me some money and paid me with a St Blues (No. 55 of 500) special tele styled guitar with split pickups, a Haagstrom bass, and red clear coated Gibson Les Paul with gobson trem. At around the same time I bought a Gibson Songwriter Delux (the best sounding and looking guitar you ever seen, then bought a Gretsch (UFO outa this world) cheap $100 play guitar because it is soo cool looking. I have a Gretch drum set and a Top Hat 2x 12 club royal amp (ebay too.) I used to play the gibson and jam with my son 12, (him on drums) but hardly have picked them up lately. I played drums 2-3 times at parties which was my first love. I first sat at a kit at age of 25 and played like I played for years the first time. It's in me but at 42 with kids, job and house needing attention, no time. Looking for some guys to start an attic band and have fun. I listen to all kinds. I love Roger Clyne and Peacmakers, Elvis Costello (older stuff) tired of being bombarded with Dave Mathews from my teenage kids... again, and again.. I have been dreaming of a Swart amp but know it too will just sit in attic with rest of them.. If only we had 2 lives...
