2008 Standard Faded vs 2010 Traditional

Achilles Heel

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I will be purchasing a guitar within the next week and these are two of the primary candidates that are available locally to me.

Both guitars have 50's necks and both are very nice players. The 2010 Les Paul Traditional is Ebony color and in mint condition. The 2008 Les Paul Standard Faded is Honey Burst basically faded to Lemon and is in near mint condition, but it does has a few small dents in the back already from casual playing.

This will be my only guitar for the next 1-3 years, and it will only be played at home for my own entertainment. I baby my guitars as they are all played at home.

My only concern is that the Les Paul Standard Faded series seems to dent and scratch very easy compared to any other guitar I have tested or owned. The Traditional is very nice but it's Ebony and I always liked a little figure or flame maple on top but I think I could live with an all black guitar if it is much better than the Standard Faded models.

One last thing, the 2008 Standard Faded is $1650 and the 2010 Traditional is $1450. I realize there are probably less expensive Standard Faded models out there but this one I have hands on experience with and can take home the same day.

Any recommendations between these two?

Which of them plays, and feels better to you?

Thats the one to go with for sure no matter of colour etc etc.

It's all a matter of taste. I'm slightly biased, being a Traditional owner, but all of the Standard Faded's that I've played have been top notch. I believe the major differences in the two are going to be the finish (typical gloss finish on the Trad, and the faded finish on the standard), and the pickups ('57 Classic/'57 Classic Plus in the Trad, BB Pro's in the Faded). It's all a matter of which one plays better for YOU, but either way, you can't go wrong with either one.
