Fred Carter Jr. one of the most active studio guitar players in history passed away at age 76 at Vanderbilt Univ. Medical Center in Nashville. You know him as the father of Deana Carter.

He started out on the Louisiana Hayride, joined Ronnie Hawks and his cousin Dale, but left to join Levon Helms as a member of The Hawks and went on to record with everyone from Conway Twitty to Simon and Garfunkel(The Boxer) Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings (River Boy was written by Fred) Kris Kristofferson Muddy Waters. But if you listen to Marty Robbins El Paso and wonder who is playing that "Spanish" guitar riff? It was Fred.

Listen to Bob Dylan's Lay Lady Lay...that guitar? It was Fred...

Some of his best work was on Levon Helms & The Rco All Stars, and American Son. He was one of the greatest players, perhaps not a house hold name (unless you lived in Nashville) but his playing influenced so many of us, through the records of others, his playing will live forever....

RIP Fred Carter Jr....Thanks for all the great music...

Thank you jaxson50 for posting about Fred Carter Jr. I was an acoustic session player here in Nashville for several years, Fred was one of my heroes, he contributed so much to the recording industry, a true legend! he will be missed.

Fred played on so many landmark records, Blond on Blond, Nashville Skyline come to mind, his two year stint with Roy Orbison and his work with Robbins was outstanding, he was the principle player on Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks Suzie Q as well. As the principle player in the RCO All-Stars, he was in rare company, Levon Helm, Booker T. and the M.G.s, Steve Cropper, Donald Dunn, Dr. John and Paul Butterfield. What a great career.
