Avatar Question

I don't think the avatar is even "soft porn." As far as I'm concerned that's not, in ways, the issue. As I've noted, I tend definitely to be a "freedom of speech" kinda guy.

 

I have some pretty nasty internal arguments on this one. I also think this thread is reflective of the music culture at large and, in ways, why we see a once "mass audience" degenerating into "small splintered audiences."

 

One part of me sez, "Sex and Rock and Roll, Yeah!" Blues have made a laughing stock even of the term "suggestive." If you listen to "swing" and get a load of some of the bird singers' eyes and voice, you know that "dress up big band" style was, and is, even more "suggestive."

 

The other part of me sez, "That avatar is artistic but it's .... not right in this venue that is international, and may include people of many cultures who may bring interpretations to a given image that may be far from what you intend."

 

I find it interesting that we have a tendency in our own Anglo-European culture to emphasize "sexiness" of music and other stuff. I just finished a piece on a 50-Y-O internationally-known concert pianist and the pix is ... very definitely "prettygirl" more than the "exceptional artist" that she is.

 

The problem I've seen over the past number of years is subcultural variation and splits where there are varying perceptions of "communication" via art. It may be illogical, but the avatar does have a psychological effect on anything you write. Some may wonder if your "being" is a naked lady holding a guitar since it is an image that represents you.

 

Bottom line is that I don't think the naked lady is a good avatar to use here. I don't think it should be banned, but... I think the question of any forum avatar should be "does this avatar represent and communicate 'me?'"

This is the definition of "soft porn" from the Collins Dictionary:

Soft porn is pornography that shows or describes sex' date=' but not very violent or unpleasant sex, or not in a very detailed way.

 

None of these photos fit that description. As a matter of fact I see more lewdness at the local beach than is depicted here in these photos. They are no more revealing than magazine covers at the local Wal-Mart. If you see the human body as something "dirty" well I don't know what to say without taking the risk of offending you. I was tought as a youngster by my parents that the human body is a beautiful thing. All the photos here are available from Guitar World magazine and the magazine is available to people of all ages.

BTW My respnse WAS an expansion of your statement on what is appropriate or not in this forum. You know there is a real double standard that exists when a man can be shown with his shirt off and show his nipples and if a woman does it, it's considered taboo. Quite frankly I think this standard was drummed by men who were either not breast fead or cannot control their erections or sexual urges. Women in in Brazil and alot of other countries walk around topless and there are no negative effects in those countries that I am aware of.

Well I heard few compalints and decided to remove the pics. Whether they had merit I am not going to debate that. What exactly was said in that comment that was offensive' date=' I'll leave for you to brew over no defense is needed. As far as my avatar I'll change it when all the other offensive avatars and signatures are removed from this forum. BTW if you people didn't like this thread then why did you all keep coming back to it?

I was curious as to how far you were going to push this. I wasn't surprised.

 

Keep your avatar if you wish, but your reason is pathetic. Other people are doing something wrong, so you think it's ok to do the same? By the way, I haven't seen anyone else with an offensive avatar for quite some time.

Well I didn't vote and really don't care. If you can't decide on your avatar pic how do you function in the real world?

Any way I digress. I find it surprising that this thread wasn't locked 3 pages ago. I'm not offended but it really has nothing to do with Gibson as the company perceives itself and I've been edited for far less.

It's just an avatar not a political statement. I've gotten alot of PM's saying they like my avatar and I was considering changing it. That's all. If people are offended in some way and think I should delete the pics i will.
