My Next Epi Will Be A...

Regret you've missed earlier posts about this guitar (because everybody else is bored hearing about it).

2007 EE built G400 Special Edition - Music123/MF exclusive' date=' I think. Due to M123 screwup, I bought it for $164.99, new.

Neck pickup - Vintage Vibe Guitars Charlie Christian style 6.9k ohms, Alnico II magnet, RWRP in a humbucker case. Tone is to die for. Compliments and matches bridge pickup extremely well but has more clarity and definition in both treble and midrange and also better bass. Well rounded, warm tone works jazz, rock and blues (it KILLS the blues!).

Bridge pickup - Guitar Fetish Mean 90 P-90 type, very versatile tone

And because you gave me a chance to show off, here's another picture!

Shhh! I took that picture before I had decided exactly what knobs to put on it. If you look closely at the bottom right corner' date=' you can see one of the pickup wires hanging out the open cavity at the back. It was supposed to be the stock picture, before the mods so young fella-me-lad could get a closer look at a similar guitar to the EMG G400 LE. Wrong address in photobucket. This is the picture that was supposed to be (and note how neatly I slid yet a THIRD picture of my G400 into the thread. Mmmwwahhhhahahah!)

If I am lucky enough to make any money from the house I'm selling (I picked a great time to sell a house, didn't I?) I'm gonna be contemplating either a Gib 339 or an Elitist Sheraton. Man, I don't know which one I'll pick. But for all I know I'll take a bath on my house & won't be able to afford strings.

If I end up buying another Epi or a cheap Gibson (getting a summer job so by the end of September, for my 17th birthday, I'm buying myself the present), I'm going to either buy a natural finish Casino or Sheraton-II, a Korina Explorer, or the Gibson SG Special Faded (cherry finish). However, if I run into a faded G-400 with the neck binding, I'm choosing that over the Gibson.

A little off this topic but related to what I'm saying above: At school, they had an open mic thing at lunch and some kid brought in his Korina Explorer (one of the choices I'm looking at), but there were three problems. One, he replaced the bridge with an EMG (81 I assume) but left the neck stock. Two, his tone was horrid, maybe because of the Crate solid state amp he was using. Three, since the event was outdoors in the school's courtyard and it was windy, and since he left the stack right at the edge of the "stage", his stack was blown over and he broke into tears.

Happy with just the LP Studio now, though.

Probably my next one too' date=' along with a Firebird.[/quote']

Love my 57 GT. Of course, someone mentioned the elitist plain top, and that's really nice too. Re the original question of what guitar next...I only keep 2 or 3 out at a time, and then swap 'em around occassionally. I just pulled out my elitist sg which has been in the closet for 6 months. It's like getting a brand new guitar! (http://judybat.googlepages.com/SG.jpg)

I just bought an Epiphone Les Paul Ultra II and it has great tone! I've been a Strat man for so long and decided I wanted to try a Les Paul for a change so I did a lot of research to find the 'right' LP but didn't want to pay an arm and leg for one. After doing a lot of checking around, I heard that some of the new Epiphone Les Pauls look, feel, and play a lot like the real deal but cost a lot less so when I heard about the Ultra II and the Nanomag and the acoustic hybrid plus LP body I decided to go try one at the local Guitar Center. I was pleasantly suprised by the tone and the sustain that came out this guitar and liked how you could dial in some sounds you don't normally get out of a LP. It looks and feels great and the sound makes you enjoy playing again. The natural tone and reverberation of the strings through the body tells you its a well made guitar (If you're like some of us oldtimers you can almost tell exactly how good a guitar is by simply grabbing the neck and hitting a note or chord and listening to it ring or bending the strings on the neck; I've been a lead guitarist for several bands and have played everything from classic rock, alternate rock, country, and even dabbled in shred metal for a little bit just to learn the technique...hey I'm not gonna let some little snot nosed punk 14 year old burn me on stage...#-o

I've played almost about every type guitar out there including Fender, Gibsons, Ibanez JEMs, Andersons, Parkers, Rickenbacher, B.C. Rich (which I don't care for at all; cheaply made as they come) and I can say that I think this will become one of my favorites. The nanomag controls are inset in the back of the guitar and they don't get in the way in the slightest. You just basically set them the way you would on a regular acoustic guitar with active pickups - you usually set it once then hardly ever change it unless you play somewhere where the acoustics are different. For you serious Gibson diehard fans, it may not have quite as MUCH sustain due to the fact that it is chambered but don't think for second that you can't hold a note and let it sustain for quite some time and have great tone. The clear tone is also great and you can ALMOST get a Strat sound out of it by combining the regular humbuckers and nanomag output.

Now for some of the gripes which are very little but this is for Epiphone if they read these columns.

1. Please put a better nut on the Ultra II; bone would be great. Plastic is not quite as good for sustain and you know that.

2. Add another toggle switch to change from the Nanomag to the humbuckers so that we don't have to turn the volume down on one to play the other exclusively (what I usually do is leave the humbuckers all the way up and turn the volume up on the nanomag to add to the acoustic quality). While this is not that much of a nuisance it requires more finger fumbling on stage and the less we have to do the better.

3. Make some models with chrome plating instead of gold plating unless you swear that the gold plating will NEVER wear off. The only reason we prefer the chrome is so that we don't have to replace the gold plated items later. If you don't touch the gold plated areas and wipe down your guitar with a soft polish cloth after you get through you probably won't have to worry.

4. Minor electronic components could be a little bit better. The toggle switch in particular; feels a little cheap but not too bad.

I got one of the Cherry Starburst (think that's what they call it) and the intonation the action were set up very well. You could definitely gig with this guitar and hold your own against many LPs if you had the right setup (tube amps, foot pedals, etc.). The neck also feels just a little thinner than a regular LP which is a good thing for me having been a Strat man for so many years. I hope this helps.
