oldpriest
I kind of like this look...different...but is the Gibbson special as good or better than a G-400? http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-SG-Special-Electric-Guitar?sku=513827 It's being clearanced for $699.99 even if the page still shows it at $799.99. dubstar
that guitar is several steps up from a G400 (better PUs, tuners, wiring, etc)...comparing to an elitist would be a different story
daneman
I've wanted to try one of these out myself. Should be as good or better than a G-400!! Some people don't like the "worn" finishes. Check out the user reviews on Harmony Central . That should give you some more information.
Prospero
Wait... $799 for yellow, while the same guitar is on for $649 in brown and cherry? http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Faded-SG-Special-Electric-Guitar?sku=517222 And why is the "list price" of the yellow one $500 more than the brown/cherry? Unless I am missing something, they are the same guitar just a different coat of paint.
FloyDZeD
There was a clearance elitist sg on MF for $602. I don't know if it's there anymore though...
FloyDZeD
$603, my bad. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Elitist-1961-SG-Standard-Electric-Guitar?sku=518407X
dubstar
technically, the yellow is "worn" while the cherry / brown are "faded"...and anyway, price differences for colors are common enough I am pretty sure that elitist SG is a glitch...you can't actually order it because it hasn't existed for about a year... tulsaslim
I played one of these at GC awhile back and was NOT impressed. Fairly crappy workmanship, IMO. Yeah, too bad you can't order an elitist anymore. Man, they are great.
yosoybay
There was a clearance elitist sg on MF for $602. I don't know if it's there anymore though... I check the guitars on sale literally daily on MF, and I pulled the trigger on this guitar immediately, and I was STILL too late. :- That thing disappeared faster than a fart in a windstorm. layboomo
I'm not at all impressed buy the low end Gibson's with the faded/worn finish.....as Tulsa said ...pretty crappy workmanship and feel IMHO.
yosoybay
I agree. It feels cheap to me. When I pulled one off the wall for the first time I gave it a few strums unplugged and then had to look down to make sure I didn't accidentally grab the wrong guitar. Nope, it was the Gibson. I think it feels cheap because it's lighter. The extra weight of the finishing materials in a Standard make it feel like a higher quality instrument. That being said, when I pulled the Gibby LP in Vintage Mahogany off the wall, I was extremely impressed. I didn't think it felt cheap in any way, even though it doesn't have the same finish. I'm actually still in love with that guitar... :-
yosoybay
Also, I know people say the thin finish helps the guitar resonate, but I don't see it at all. If you tap the Standard on the body with your finger, it makes a deep, rich noise. If you tap the Faded on the body with your finger, it sounds more high pitched and almost twangy. I also saw these differences when playing them unplugged - the Faded seemed less rich and "mahogany-sounding" than the Standard. But maybe that's just me. My wife often accuses me of being hard of hearing. :-
bluesstringer
I've tried them and as others have said, bad workmanship. I think these type of clearances are usually, not always, reserved for inferior runs from manufacturers.
dubstar
too much generalization here...depends on the guitar, I've seen several that are really nice and mine could not be accused of any of the faults listed above...as always, try before you buy...
