As to "Telecasters?" Hard to beat! Been playing my Epi and Gibson guitars, mostly for about a month, but...today, I got out my old, faithful, "Strat!" Such a sweet guitar, and so different. I'd really like to get all of those models of Gibson I've always drooled over, but I'll never pay those kinds of prices. Its okay cuz Epis suit me just fine anyway. Funny that it is a 2004, according to the serial number. I bought it when Musician's Friend was blowing them out for $230 in February 2007. I only started playing in 2006. I've had the idea of getting a part-time job and buying myself a guitar for my 17th birthday. It'll either be a Jackson DK2 in Eerie Dess Swirl or an Epiphone Casino or Sheraton II in natural. The pictures in this thread are already tipping me towards the Sheraton II. Fear not, SlagJones, your Special II isn't slumming it up (it would if it were black or vintage sunburst), I was going to start on one until my dad bought me the Squier Strat Pack instead. My first Epi is "Plain Jane" or just "Jane" affectionately named for the fact that she is a studio sunburst plain top. She is also an Elitist and she is sweet. Have a peek! I bought Jane off eBay. She was a GC floor display with a broken volume knob and a scratch on the bottom near the strap button. I had a Gibby LP back in the 80's but sold it. I played a strat for 15 years after that but always had the jones for another LP. I knew I counldn't afford a Gibby but when I heard about the Elitist line I was hooked. I almost bought a Korean standard LP before this one but it got sold before I could get the cash together. So I ended up with Jane. No regrets. I love her tone. I also bought an SG Special which I gave to my son to learn with. He has since bought other guitars but he still plays that SG Special the most. Epi's rock! This was before the Hofner Icon came out and I didn't want to take a chance on a Rogue or a Jay Turser.. I didn't know anything about those brands (though they're probably made in the same factory) and I had actually played a Viola... I found one when I was living in Indiana at a small shop in West Lafayette.. The Viola had just come out at the time (1999?) and they wanted list price for it! ($699!) I didn't know that was list price at the time, so I kinda forgot about it for a few years, until I saw one hanging in a Daddy's Junky Music in Nashua, NH for $399.. I didn't snag it right away... I GASsed over it for about a month or so and tried to justify buying it (I rarely make impulse guitar purchases.. Unless it's a really good deal..) When I finally decided to buy it, it was gone! And the "salesman" at Daddy's said they weren't going to stock it anymore... So I had to have them special order it for me... Took two months to get it... During this time, the Hofner Icon came out and cost $50 less.. I kinda kicked myself for a while, until I actually got to play an Icon.. I think the Viola's a much better bass.. It's not a full hollow body like the Hofner, but I think it sounds and feels a lot better.. The Icon just feels cheap to me.. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I did a little digging on it and wound up finding an interview with BB where he actually said that he couldn't understand why people would pay so much for a Gibson when the Epiphone was such a good guitar. lol I was actually in the market for a Martin D-28 and wound up with the Lucille. She never learned to play it, but it was the first guitar I played and took lessons with. Still have it. The first Epi I bought on my own was the Les Paul ES off the bay back in '03. Also have a Sorrento i got this year. 'Epiphone' is a great company name, in looks, spelling, and sound. The 'E' symbol is pretty cool, too. I was playing (I still am) in a band that plays American/British rock music fron the 65-68 era. I was figuring on a hollowbody or semi-hollow body. I did some reading online about Epiphone Sheraton II's and Casinos. When I got to the music store I saw both hanging up on the rack. For some reason the Sheraton II NA caught my eye. I started playing it and fell in love with it. I tried the Casino also, but I couldn't get access to the upper register as easily when playing lead guitar. Also, the Casino was much more expensive than the Sheraton II. The Sheraton was $529.00 annd the Casino was $599.00. It was a red 335 type thing with a bigsby imitation, plastic pickups with the non adjustable pole pieces molded in the plastic pickup covers, bolt on neck with washers for spacers and the switch on top like the supernova. About 1984-85. I thought it was good until I got my 68 335 then I figured out that it was a POS and got rid of it. After that I never thought much of Epiphone until my friend became a dealer and gave me a 98 catalog and showed me the AJ45 which I bought from him. Odered the case at the same time. Still waiting for that to come in. They shipped the guitar with no case and told him the case had a 6 month back order. He loaned me a store case to fit it until mine came in. He later dropped Epiphone from his store a few years later but told me he never cancelled the case order and never received it either. Everytime he would ask his rep it was always on BO. They have come a long way since then. 3/4s of my collection now is Epiphone/ Gibson but they still owe me that case for my AJ45. Maybe another 10 years to go? ssgfowler Posted May 27, 2008 Share Posted May 27, 2008 After stepping away from the guitar in 1991 (marriages, kids, jobs, divorces, etc.) about 2 years ago I decided I really wanted to play guitar again. So, I bought one of the Epi Player Packs on sale Memorial Day Weekend two years ago. Not the best guitar and amp in the world, but it was good enough to get me hooked again. A year later, I was playing better, ran into some money and picked up a real Gibson SG, then a Epi Valve Jr. that I modded to sound better, but I kept the Epi guitar and amp because my youngest son wanted me to teach him how to play. The Player Pack guitar and amp served him well. He stuck with it thru the "I suck" period (it's the only hobby he ever really stayed with). Long story short, now he's 14, the proud owner of an Epi SG-400, and a Line 6 Spider III 15 watt. He plays really well for someone with only a year under their belt, but all that Player Pack stuff is carefully tucked away waiting for the next kid/grandkid who wants to learn how to rock.
