Epiphone P-90 Pickups Question

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm in need of purchasing a new Epi electric and have been told that Epi guitars which carry the P-90s are the real deal as in genuine Gibson pickups... in other words, they are not lesser P-90s made for Epiphone guitars. Can anyone verify this?

I did purchase a G-400 awhile ago and immediately threw away the stock pickups and stuffed her with new Gibson P-94s.

What Know you???

Thanks.

They do carry Epiphone P90s, but they have been said to be closer to the Gibson pickups than any of their standard humbuckers. There is some difference however due to different materials etc, but if it does matter - only you can decide that. I think dcooper830 has videos of both on YouTube.

Casino wise they are not too much different tone wise from Gibsons. I played my MIK casino against an elitist at one point and just not a lot of tone difference. I was ready to trade my burst MIK for the burst elitist but there was just not enough difference.

The elitist was put together perfect and did not have the random selector rattle every now and then, but I left with my guitar happy and bought something else.

The other guys here can compare the other P90s like in the LPs for you. My bandmate has an Epiphone gold top with the P90s and it sounds fine, but we have never done a side by side with a Gibson. His Gibson LP has humbuckers but he plays his Epiphone more and his Gibson pretty much never leaves his house.

I guess like it was said here you have to decide how far you want to take it. If you have to have Gibson P90s get them.

I'll put Kent Armstrong P90s up agains the epis or elitists anyday.

I think the stock epi casinos are pretty nice pups to start with.. don't get me wrong.

and those are probably the same p90s they use in all the epis.

KA' s just don't have the reputation they deserve yet.

They are not 'the real deal'; if they were they would have 'Gibson' stamped on the base. That being said, I'd say they are within 90-95% of their Gibson counterparts. I did an A/B comparison of an Epi with P-90s versus a Gibson SG Classic and the difference is very small indeed, especially since some percentage of the difference had to be attributed to the superior tonewood of the SG.
