Pickup questions...

i'm kinda new to choosing pups, and i'm looking for something a little hotter to put in my SG. i play mostly old-school thrash metal and NWOBHM, which i usually add a thrash-ish sound to, so my first choice would probably be EMG's. but i dont really want to spend $200 on pickups that i havent had a chance to really try yet. i'm gonna find a couple of pups that i hink ill like, then go to GC and try them out, but for now i'm going on reviews and opinions. so, can someone give me some opinions on the 500t/ 496r combo? i found a pair on ebay for $1, so should i just go ahead and try them? theyre supposed to be almost as good as emg's without the active-ness. also, how do these compare to duncans and dimarzios?

Save yourself some money and visit guitar stores, friends with pups installed that you are interested in, browse the net for pickup mp3 files and listen through a good set of headphones. When you find the ones that sound like what you want, buy them. Your favorite guitar hero will use what you need. What does he use?

I'm a DiMarzio guy myself, but I have heard that these Rockfield pickups are pretty darn good and cost much less. I was thinking of trying a set myself. If you want to try DiMarzios, I recommend Steve's Special in the Bridge and PAF Pro in the neck, I have this combo in three of my guitars and it is great for the heavy stuff as well as classic rock. Like the previous posts implied, try out as many combinations as you can get your hands on. Both DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan have nice utilities on their sites to help you make an informed choice. The links are below, good look in your search.

can someone give me some opinions on the 500t/ 496r combo? i found a pair on ebay for $1,

first.. at that price buy them.. and if you don't like them, resell for a profit.

second, I had those pups in my sheraton.. and for me, p90s did the trick. So my opinion might seem negative since I didn't keep them but it's not..

I had them in about four years before I swapped out.

Nice pups. bright bridge pickup.. ceramic magnets I recall.. plenty of power and very nice tone.

for metal/thrash. I dunno. seems those guys use very high output pickups, or active a lot. so.. since my metal slows down quite a bit around led zeppelin, I don't feel qualified to say for sure.

But you wont get hurt at that price!

the 500t is supposed to have as much output as the Dirty Fingers. also, one of my favorite guitarists, kirk hammett, used a gibson flying v in the early metallica days, i know he eventually changed the pups to emg's, but i think he had the stock pups in for at leat the first album. i think ill go ahead and buy them, cause for $1, you cant really waste the money.

The April issue of Guitar Player mag has a review of four Rockfield pickups that speaks rather well of them. The street prices were around $49 as I remember. I'd at least take a look at them.
