Rockin_Dude
I need some help ?well maybe not so much help. But i do need some info on finishes.I have three different epi`s here. Here`s the thing after making repairs to all of them ,i have lost my list of just what is use on the different years. here is the list of them ,fisrt is a 1965 ES-335 in cherry burst second one is a 2005 SG-400 goth black finish Last is 1985 Dot done in Transparent Red and so the question is what one has what finish on it lacquer or a catalyzed polymer. nitrocellulose lacquer all have been used by epiphone I know the ES_335 is lacquer base and clear is lacquer too. The transparent red ? not sure if it is lacquer,or nitrocellulose,if it is can, i use lacquer over it for the clear coat.ya i should know this ,but ,oh well it`s one of them days
Rockin_Dude
Ok, so i know that catalyzed polymer is used on Acoustics guitars for a finish. Now the question remains,if one can put clear lacquer over nitrocellulose finish. without clouding or turning milky.. Guess i better call dupont ,to get the answer.. Funkwire
The forums on reranch.com will give you tons of information. You can do keyword searches there. I'm not aware of any modern Epis having nitro finishes...but Iconoclast and Rotcanx are far more qualified to speak on that than I am. But my advice, as far as putting clear lacquer over nitro...would be no, don't do it.
Biff
second one is a 2005 SG-400 goth black finish Last is 1985 Dot done in Transparent Red and so the question is what one has what finish on it lacquer or a catalyzed polymer. IIRC Epiphones have had a polyester finish for some time now. I wonder if it was the case already in 1985.
Dave
Here's an interesting article that may or may nor directly answer your question, but it details several options and the reasons for them. http://www.musicianshotline.com/archive/monthly/guitar_er/11_04.htm
RotcanX
Well, since notrocellulose is lacquer, you shouldn't have any Lacquer is one finish that can be applied over just about anyhing. For exampe, you can put lacquer over enamel (but not the other way around). The '85 Dot could be polyurethane, but the G-400 is more likely polyester. You can use lacquer over either one.
