Dot decision woes

Well, thanks to a nice bit of B-day cash, I'm ready to get my Dot finally. I know that I have to play it and it has to feel right to me, but I'm curious about everyone's opinion between the Dot and the Dot Studio. My local store would have to order me in the Dot in Natural (my preferred choice) but they have a Dot Studio in the store that really catches my eye. I'm just not sure I can get past the single volume and tone controls and, maybe more so than that, the lack of fretboard inlays. It feels good to me and I like the look. It's an actual Cherry color instead of the Worn Cherry. I can't find anywhere that says Epi is making them in this color but the serial # indicates it was made back in Jan. '08. That cherry really looks good with the black binding.

Thoughts everyone?

Thanx,

Ike

I think the color is/was called tomato. I have a Dot Studio and feel that it is a great guitar for the price. Keep in mind that the Studio has the hot bridge pickup, unlike the regular Dot. For about $270, you can't beat it.

Go someplace that has both' date=' in stock...play them both, and then decide.

Don't settle for the one they've got, if it's not your first choice. Especially,

when you haven't had the chance to comapre the two...side by side!

I couldn't agree more. If you settle for the the one they have, you'll always have that nagging question in the back of your mind, whether or not you made the right decision (buyer's remorse).

Even if you have to make a road trip of it, it'll be worth your time going to a store that has both models so that you can do a side-by-side comparison.

In all honesty, whichever one you buy, you're going to wish you had bought the other one.

Last time I bought a guitar, I was either buying a Strat, Tele, or Martin 000.

I narrowed it down to the Strat or 000, because the Strat I liked was doing everything similarly-priced Teles were doing.

I bought the Strat, and don't regret it, but there are times (like Saturday night) when I really wish I had the Martin.

It's going to be a graduation present to myself, though. Either that or a Melody Maker.

Also, for your own stated reasons, the standard Dot, seems to be more, what you really want...

They are very similar, in tone...in that both are humbucker equiped guitars. If you love semi-

hollow bodies, and want 2 differnt tones...A Dot, then a Casino (or, possibly at Wildkat) makes

more sense. But, ultimately, it's up to you...

Have fun, testing!

Thanx everyone. Got the responses I pretty much figured on. Once they get in the standard Dot and I can play both side by side, I guess that will be the clincher.

For those of you with real modding skills, has anyone ever added dot markers to a fretboard? Would it be that hard to do?

It's not that hard but it's the kind of thing you want to do before the frets are in, since you need to sand down the dots to match the curvature of the fingerboard so that they are perfectly smooth and flush with the fingerboard surface. So, in order to do a really good job, the frets would have to come off. Thing is, the Studio has position markers on the edge of the fretboard so it's not like you're completely lost.

One other thing to take into account is that the Studio has a hotter bridge pickup than the regular Dot.

And Ricochet is correct; the only other 'red' colour offered on the Dot Studio was called 'Tomato'... it's not 'cherry' by a long shot. The Dot Studio was originally offered in Black, Tomato, Yellow, Blue, Grey and White gloss finishes.

Went back and looked at it again today. It's definitely cherry, says Dot Studio CH on the sticker inside. Missed it the first time around but according to the back of the headstock, it's a "Limited Edition/Custom Shop". EE factory, made in Jan. '08. It's so pretty against the black binding with the open black pickups and black pickup rings with black speed knobs.

They're going to order in the natural Dot so I can compare. I can always go over to GC in town and compare but I'd rather do it with the actual two guitars I may take home and give the business to the "little guy".

I cannot find this guitar anywhere on the web. So, it not only sounds like it's pretty but even better, somewhat unique. I like that my new Dot Studio doesn't look like any other I've seen.

I bought my son a tomato Dot studio a couple of years ago. He really likes it, but when it came time for me to buy my Dot a month or so ago, I went for a standard model and have no regrets. The tomato color certainly is unique (I've never seen another one in person), but at the end of the day, one volume and one tone knob seemed a bit limiting to me.

WAY cool. Love it when Epi drops those LE bombs... no warning, no info about 'em on the net. I bet she's gorgeous.

  • 2 weeks later...

You know. I have been thinking the same thing. Thing is I like the look of the normal DOT, but the sound of the studio is just AWSOME!! I love the tone from that bridge picup. I guess I could swap it easy enough though

One other thing I noticed when I had them put it on hold for me (I'll pick her up next week and post pics!) was that, I guess because it's a "Limited Edition/Custom Shop" thing, it's got a maple body like the standard Dots instead of the mahogany one on the normal studios.

I know you said you wanted a natural Dot or a studio. Here is something to look at though.

I know the Dots usually go for $399. I saw one of these at the Villa Park GC Memoral Day for their special one day $359. I looked really nice and I thought about it glad I didn't. I may now though and get new tuners and a set of GFS 9s and see how it turns out before I start replacing stuff on my Supernova.

I would love to take the credit for being correct once in my life, but it was in fact Ron G...credit due etc...

I think I'm getting an alright deal. $275 for the "Limited Edition" (I'm sure they made about a million of them) studio. Let's just say that no one, me or the store, is getting hurt over the deal.

Hell, yes! The best price anywhere for a new first-quality Dot Studio is $269. Can't wait to see pix.
