luvastogie Posted June 2, 2008 Share Posted June 2, 2008 Well, thanks to a nice bit of B-day cash, I'm ready to get my Dot finally. I know that I have to play it and it has to feel right to me, but I'm curious about everyone's opinion between the Dot and the Dot Studio. My local store would have to order me in the Dot in Natural (my preferred choice) but they have a Dot Studio in the store that really catches my eye. I'm just not sure I can get past the single volume and tone controls and, maybe more so than that, the lack of fretboard inlays. It feels good to me and I like the look. It's an actual Cherry color instead of the Worn Cherry. I can't find anywhere that says Epi is making them in this color but the serial # indicates it was made back in Jan. '08. Ron G Posted June 2, 2008 Share Posted June 2, 2008 I think the color is/was called tomato. I have a Dot Studio and feel that it is a great guitar for the price. Don't settle for the one they've got, if it's not your first choice. Especially, when you haven't had the chance to comapre the two...side by side! If you settle for the the one they have, you'll always have that nagging question in the back of your mind, whether or not you made the right decision (buyer's remorse). Even if you have to make a road trip of it, it'll be worth your time going to a store that has both models so that you can do a side-by-side comparison. Last time I bought a guitar, I was either buying a Strat, Tele, or Martin 000. I narrowed it down to the Strat or 000, because the Strat I liked was doing everything similarly-priced Teles were doing. I bought the Strat, and don't regret it, but there are times (like Saturday night) when I really wish I had the Martin. It's going to be a graduation present to myself, though. They are very similar, in tone...in that both are humbucker equiped guitars. If you love semi- hollow bodies, and want 2 differnt tones...A Dot, then a Casino (or, possibly at Wildkat) makes more sense. But, ultimately, it's up to you... Have fun, testing! Would it be that hard to do?[/quote'] It's not that hard but it's the kind of thing you want to do before the frets are in, since you need to sand down the dots to match the curvature of the fingerboard so that they are perfectly smooth and flush with the fingerboard surface. So, in order to do a really good job, the frets would have to come off. Thing is, the Studio has position markers on the edge of the fretboard so it's not like you're completely lost. One other thing to take into account is that the Studio has a hotter bridge pickup than the regular Dot. And Ricochet is correct; the only other 'red' colour offered on the Dot Studio was called 'Tomato'... it's not 'cherry' by a long shot. It's definitely cherry, says Dot Studio CH on the sticker inside. Missed it the first time around but according to the back of the headstock, it's a "Limited Edition/Custom Shop". EE factory, made in Jan. '08. It's so pretty against the black binding with the open black pickups and black pickup rings with black speed knobs. They're going to order in the natural Dot so I can compare. I can always go over to GC in town and compare but I'd rather do it with the actual two guitars I may take home and give the business to the "little guy". So, it not only sounds like it's pretty but even better, somewhat unique. I like that my new Dot Studio doesn't look like any other I've seen. He really likes it, but when it came time for me to buy my Dot a month or so ago, I went for a standard model and have no regrets. The tomato color certainly is unique (I've never seen another one in person), but at the end of the day, one volume and one tone knob seemed a bit limiting to me. I saw one of these at the Villa Park GC Memoral Day for their special one day $359. I looked really nice and I thought about it glad I didn't.
