iansmitchell
Has anyone here had any experience with refurbished or "B-stock" epiphones?
jcwillow777
I got a refurbished Dot from MF for $250. It has some very minor finish flaws, but for that price I can't complain. Everything worked perfect. It was stamped 2nd and came with the full warrantee. I wouldn't buy any refurb or 2nd off Ebay. With MF you get 45 days to check it out. If it don't like it send it back. Not so with Ebay. I'd buy another if I got a good deal and it was something I was thinking about getting, but only from a reputable dealer. Ron G
If you'll browse through my previous threads, you'll find the entire story of my B stock Dot Studio. Too much to repeat. Edit. I do not believe the problems with my guitar had anything to do with being a 2nd; it was simply a poorly assembled piece that unfortunately made it through QC. Just Strum
I have a 2nd Epiphone Dot that I was fortunate to get for free, but to this day I cannot find a flaw.

Just Strum
I didn't know free guitars could be flawed. I never thought of it that way. I took it over a friends house and we were playing and after about an hour he started comparing it to his 335. As he was looking at the two he noted that the only two things he could find was the ply of the pick guard and "2nd" stamped on the back of the headstock. I never even noticed it since I was so taken by the guitar. After that I kept looking it over and to this day I cannot find any flaw/blem FREE IS GOOD
FrankS1281734010
...another b-stock dot studio here. got it for 250ish on the 'bay a couple years back. only flaws i could find were a negligible scratch on the back of the neck and this weird indentation on the back of the headstock that's almost a perfect rectangle. i've seen the same indentation on other b-stock/2nd epis, too. anyone know what the deal is with that? BillyGibson
I'm new here. A month ago, I bought a Cherry Sunburst from Same Day Music that was labled "Blemished". It still had the stickers on the pickups, sticker on the pick guard. There is no #2 stamped on it either. It's perfect. I cannot find a thing wrong with it. A friend who has 54 guitars looked it over too and couldn't find anything to point a finger at either. (25 year ago he worked in a music store and is addicted to ebay). This is my first Les Paul and it is a beautiful guitar. I was leary about buying a "blem" too. But figured, if whatever is wrong with it is more than I can bear, I would return it. SDM has a 60 Day return period. I'm not too experienced of a player. The action on it was good for me. No fret buzz anywhere and it's easy to play. I'm totaly sold on it. I had to get used to how the pickup selector worked. Like when it's in the middle position and you turn one of the volume knobs down all the way, both pickups go off. JRizZ
I bought a 2nd stamped Epi Hummingbird at the end of last year, and I've seen plenty of "1st" guitars with worst finishes and more problems that this one has! Anyway - when guitars are sold as 2nds they have already been sent to Epiphone approved refirbishment centres to be corrected before they are sold - as is my understanding anyway! So as long as you can live with "2nd" stamped on the back of the head (which isn't very noticable anyway) I see no reason to not buy one and save money! What you got most likely was a brand new guitar that someone else purchased and for whatever reason decided to return the guitar. There are a myriad amount of factors as to why SDM had to sell it as a blem. You reaped the reward for someone's miscue as SDM couldn't sell the guitar as new. :D/ Hopefully you'll enjoy the guitar for many many years. luvastogie
My 2007 Daewon Honeyburst Plain top is a 2nd. Other than a couple very minor discolorations in the finish around the headstock, I couldn't find a thing wrong with her. She played every bit as well as the full price ones next to her in the shop and I took her home for $300 instead of the $400 they wanted for the non-2nd's. tvyellow
My dot is a blem from MF stamped second on the back. The only problem I can spot is a thin line of red paint near the binding on the back of the guitar! LOVE my Dot!
bluesstringer
I had a Dot a couple of years ago that was a 2nd and while I personally didn't like the guitar (neck) I would have defied anyone to find a flaw on it. The other Dot i had at the time was not a 2nd and did have a couple of finish slaws. you just have to inspect them, as they vary widely. I have seen 2nds that i would not want to own. Just Strum
My dot is a blem from MF stamped second on the back. The only problem I can spot is a thin line of red paint near the binding on the back of the guitar! LOVE my Dot! Intersting - I was playing mine today and for the first time noticed something that "may" clarify why it's a second. Along the headstock edge for E A D tuners there is a red stripe that almost looks as if the black paint is worn off. You really can't see it most of the time, the lighting has to be just right. If that's it, I'm selling. There is no way I can live with that.
byrds1965
I have 2nds also. My Jorma is and my EJ160e are both stamped seconds. I still have not figured out what the flaws are and I have looked.
Dave
Same here. A friend recently bought a Black Epi LP custom and we haven't been able to find anything that we would declare to be a flaw. And, the pups sound great.
RotcanX
I bought a B-stock Elitist 335 that had the frets levelled. Ended up getting a 25% discount as a result. Thank you very much. Also just picked up a B-stock Gibson '61 Reissue SG and basically the only thing wrong with it is there are some barely visible cracks in the finish where the neck binding goes over the fret ends. Again, for $200 off cost (or $350 off retail), thank you VERY much.
