Big Norm Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 As you see...my babies are always on the wall, ready to go. I have an hardshell case for each of them, but only to transport.
CodeMonk Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Mine are on stands. My "studio", workshop (I make various guitar effects and such) is a rather small room and there isn't much wall space. To many damn shelves. Hell, I barely have room for my guitars in there.
Ricochet Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I have only had problems with my faded SG the stand left a mark on the back of the neck where the rubber touched. Other than that one no problems. I like stands vs wall mount' date=' but I changed all my stands to the A-frames more stable and close to the floor and they tend to give the guitars a display look to them also, which is a happy advantage.[/quote'] Shame about the mark. I'll bet it doesn't play any less. Yeah, I like the stand look as well. It just takes up a lot of space if you have say more than one guitar...
Ricochet Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Just how far west of civilization do you live? :D Not far enough... I's kidding....House is solid West European brick, it's also dated 1929 and built to lower middle class specs.
Ricochet Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 If I was going to do the wall thing' date=' I would get a nice 1 by sand and stain it or finish/paint how you want and screw it to the studs in the walls then attach the wall hangers to that and you should have no problems. [/quote'] That's probably the smartest solution. I just don't like the look.(No offence Just Strum)
Ricochet Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 That'd be east... Like 3 lefts make a right. Travel westward from something far enough and at some point you'll end up east...
Dru_d20 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 That's just with nitro-finished guitars. I would love to hang my guitars on the wall if it weren't for the fact I put little trust in the quality of my walls. I'm having eery visions of the wall collapsing' date=' crushing my entire collection...:D [/quote'] Well, that would suck beyond words...what a terrible vision. Damn you guys crack me up!
BluezOldy Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I use a couple of racks like this one as they save space . Mine are a lot more solid-looking than this one appears to be: http://www.venuemusic.com.au/Products.asp?ProdID=1081
pohatu771 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Just how far west of civilization do you live? :D Eerie visions... Sweeney Todd avatar. I'm guessing Fleet Street, London.
snookelputz Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I have seen, I think, 2 guitars with marks on the bottom of the headstock from abusive (my opinion) use of a wall hanger; I've seen several guitars with marks from abusive use of stands. Hell, I abused my Martin (early life purchase) by leaning it against the table because I didn't buy a stand OR a wall hanger to the point where there are bumps in the back of the neck. That's why IMHO, almost all the stories about this kind of damage should be taken with a grain of salt. Its very easy to become distracted while talking to someone, for example, and then not take sufficient care in putting the guitar down. Amazing how those stands can move 2 or 3 inches in an unexpected direction from where you THINK it is, isn't it? And how about walking through a doorway? or trying to adjust the amp without banging the headstock on something over there where I'm not looking? Somebody out there actually designed and sells a stand that holds the headstock off the floor when you lay the guitar down full length. You know someone will step on it; its a law of nature - Any guitar that can be damaged, will be damaged. Yeah, stands and hangers damage more guitars than thoughtless owners. Right. Sure they do. Want to buy a bridge? The point being that nobody can prevent little dings and scratches getting on a guitar. It is at risk any time it is out of the case, and cases can be knocked over, dropped, kicked, tripped over and fallen down on. So don't worry so much about something not in your control. Figure out what steps you can personally take, train yourself to take those steps every time you have a guitar out of the case. Then accept that you have done all that could be done when the inevitable happens. There are enough bad things in the world to worry about already, no need to worry about feeling guilty (hard to type that, kept wanting to come out "guitar" instead) over something that hasn't even happened!
pohatu771 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 And how about walking through a doorway?Doorways, ceiling fans... I've done it all. Low ceilings + ceiling fans + taking the guitar off when using a strap...
byrds1965 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Shame about the mark. I'll bet it doesn't play any less. Yeah' date=' I like the stand look as well. It just takes up a lot of space if you have say more than one guitar...[/quote'] The mark is no big deal and came from one of those surgical tube stands the red just stuck to the tubing I polished the spot so it doesn't affect playing I can't feel it now. I like the stands because with the wall mount deal you are stuck with the guitars in one place. I have my small amps in the room but if I bring my Twin, up the stairs.....hernia, then I put it on a chair and move stuff around to make it all fit in.
TheX Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 In a normal day I play at least 8 different guitars, I keep them on wall hangers in my loft. No one else goes in there and no one else plays them. When I play out somewhere I take 2 with me, a jumbo Carvin acoustic and my Clapton Strat.
Midgetfist Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I prefer wall hanging for a few reasons... I have a 2 y/o daughter, I practice much more when the guitar is within reach (as opposed to a case), and I thing it just looks groovy. The Epi is hanging on a Hercules bracket (very secure in the stud), while the cheap brackets are great for headphones. What's great is that standard stud spacing allows for placement of (most) guitars side by side - the Epi will have a playmate soon. Staggering is not an option for me, as my daughter would be able to reach the lower guitar.
Just Strum Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 That's probably the smartest solution. I just don't like the look.(No offence Just Strum) What look is that - the stain? When I do mine, I'm not sure if I will paint of stain. I guess it all depends on the color I paint the walls.
Ricochet Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 What look is that - the stain? When I do mine' date=' I'm not sure if I will paint of stain. I guess it all depends on the color I paint the walls.[/quote'] The wooden bar across the wall look...
Just Strum Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 The wooden bar across the wall look...[/quote'] Oh, now I understand. You like the staggered look like Big Norm or midgetfist has. I like the color of the wall that midgetfist has, it makes the guitar pop. Both have a nice look. The board is usually used when wall stud is an issue.
51xt33 Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 In a normal day I play at least 8 different guitars' date=' I keep them on wall hangers in my loft. No one else goes in there and no one else plays them. When I play out somewhere I take 2 with me, a jumbo Carvin acoustic and my Clapton Strat.[/quote'] You live the sweet life X. I would love to be able to play more than a couple guitars daily. I currently only own 7 guitars, of which I try to play at least 2 of them daily so i can stay familiar with the way they hang and neck shape. Midgetfist that wall looks nice. Very cool looking with the texture, the Hercules/Epi and headphones........ and the whole "clean" way you have everything located. Makes me want to put a lock on my guitar/computer den and put some hangers on my wall.
lpdeluxe Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I use A-frame stands from Carvin. They're inexpensive, and the newer ones have a locking feature so they don't fold up without a conscious effort (your conscious effort, not the stand's). They are more stable than the base-support-plus-neck -girdle kind I used to have, and furthermore they don't lose their parts over time like the others do. I don't have small kids any more, so I don't worry about tipping over the stands. I even put my Les Paul on it. Which brings up a true story: a friend bought a beautiful LP bass and kept it on a neck-hanging stand in his music room. In the normal course of raising children, one ran past the stand, knocked it over, and then it was a trip to Mark Erlewine's in Austin for peghead grafting surgery. When my kids were young and living at home, my axes stayed in their cases. Now, whichever instrument has my attention at the moment is on a stand, and the rest are in cases that live in a PVC rack I built.
Just Strum Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I just got rid of my drum set last night, so now I can start focusing on setting up a guitar room and the wall of hangers.
