Any humbucking guitar will work to a degree. If I was going for metal though? I'd look at an SG or a Les Paul with either the EMG's or the Tony Iommi pups...

The Ibanez RG series are pretty popular for that sort of thing.

Every RG under 600 is pure ****.

The tremolos crap out in 6 months, the switches are junk, the body wood is the sam quality as your avarage squier strat.

The neck is your classic superstrat neck, ad if you like that kind of thing, it's the single best part of the guitar.

Don't bother with anything other than an original floyd rose for metal.

The epiphone prophecy FX SG is the best current option.

Not sure about epiActive pickups, but the option of using them minus batteries or as actives seems nice.

Comes with real OFL, no licensed crap or in-house trainwreck.

i'm not a fan of floyd rose as i like to lean on the bridge and dig in. on an ibanez i would have swaped the floyd rose for a vintage trem and had the real wood over "basswood" whatever that is. but i don't know if there is the option even though there are lots of models. i think vintage trems don't move backwards (up) so leaning on it is ok. but it's a long time since i had one... squire affinity strats are alder the same as proper strats. bullet squire strats are basswood.

the epi sg limited edition is only in alpine white? i don't like it with silver hardware. i can't find a uk price for that. but if $600 ends up around £300 then i would go for a prophesy sg. oh no not another black guitar!!! other than that i'm still looking.

it seems active pickup batteries last 3000 hours. not sure if thats hype but i could live with that.

You can play metal with any guitar. It all depends on the effects you have between the guitar and the amp. I recommend a Boss Metal Zone but there are scores of other pedals that will do equally well. If you want to experiment with pickups, I would go for a Dimarzio Super Distorsion for the bridge. Leave the neck pup alone. You wont be using it anyway. There is a good comparison video on utube. The guy compares about 5 or 6 pickups, including the Dimarzio, EMG's, 498 etc. Here it is:

If you just want a guitar that looks like a metal guitar, you might like a Jackson RR3 or similar.

This is what I use

i've never tried or owned a guitar with high output pups. i would like to have/ try one. i can use my other guitars as standard. having to use a compressor or tube screamer for that extra you get with these guitars? i've heard they kill the tone. but...

that test wasn't long enough. i would have liked to hear some soloing!

Wow!! Fantastic guitar there... Nice!=D>

I have to agree there, perhaps a Jackson Soloist, or Performer.. tends to suit my needs..

seems the epiphone limited edition alpine white with emg's is limited to america only from what wilkepedia says. esp, epi prophecy, ibanez, jackson some choice there... i wish prophesy was a different colour though.

what is the neck joint on an epi les paul prophecy is it the same as the standard epiphone les paul. i have a les paul copy and the is a hinderance for anything past the 15th fret?

I'd agree that you can play metal with any humbucker equipped guitar, for the most part. Hell, before I got my LP, my Epi Dot Studio did fairly well for metal with the proper amp/OD settings. If you still want a specific "metal" guitar (heh, I do too its a good excuse to buy another guitar), the Tony Iommi SG is sweet (I don't personally like sig. guitars, but this thing looks great and it has good hot Gibson pickups in it), or perhaps work a deal with a used LP Custom at a shop, with them installing the EMG 81/85 combo or install them yourself if you can. There are some other makers that have a couple AWESOME metal options (Schecter, Michael Kelly Premium), but I mentioned the Epiphones first. Good luck!!
