Peterpuck
This is my first post so don't dump too much. I've been looking at a lot of used EPI LPs on line lately and have always been asking the seller about the neck profile (if they don't list it). I know I prefer the thinner necks (since I don't have large hands) but I can't really tell someone how to determine which neck profile they have (unless they bought the guitar new, and were told what they have). I used to think that the EPI LP classic always had a 60s slim tapered neck and the EPI standard always had a "standard" ( but not a thick/chunky). Also, was thinking that the nut width would let you pin down the profile (ie. 1 5/8 nut = slim taper, 1 11/16 nut = standard)? Is there any quick and dirty way of determining the neck profile? Thanks a bunch for all your help in advance.
RotcanX
Is there any quick and dirty way of determining the neck profile? No. Unlike Gibson, Epiphone doesn't really 'do' a different neck profile on their Classic model... it's just a Standard with open coil pickups. And pretty much all Epi LPs, except the Ultra, have a 1 11/16" nut; anyone that gets a smaller number is probably measuring it wrong... like inside the binding or some silly thing like that. What I've found is that the Customs seem to have a slimmer profile, and the older Korean models, particularly the old Samicks from the early nineties have nice slim taper profiles... the newer stuff has been getting kind of clunky. Peterpuck
Thnx Rotcanx. I've been measuring the neck circumferences at various fret locations of the dozen or so gits I have and have noticed that most of the dimensions are very close even though some of them "feel" a lot thinner and more comfortable than others (mostly epi LPs but also have some, couple epi SGs and some epi 335 types). Was even thinking that the block inlay necks and the parallelogram inlays might have a bearing on profile but this doesn't seem to be true either. The only true GIbson I have is a Studio LP GEM series and I don't like the neck on it much as it feels way too chunky for me. I have one of those Samick LPs and it does appear to have my favorite slim neck profile although some of the more recent LPs also seem to be slim tapered as well. Digger
G'day Pete, I have 3 Epis one of which is an acoustic. I have small hands and short fingers and I find the Epiphone necks to be extremely good for me as the ones I have got are all very slim profile. I have heard forum members comment about Dots having a wider neck but the ones I have got are all really good. (Casino, G400 & EJ300SCE) Good luck Dig
Dave
In playing quite a few Epi LP's and owning 3 models, I don't notice much difference in the neck profile. I haven't measured, bt didn't feel the need to. They just all play well and all are quite slim.
