Elitist snobbery?

there is (was?) a twisted sister lp on ebay for a while now. looks like the price has bottomed out on it finally. also, there is a elitist sg (a black 2nd) somewhere on harmony central for $500, i think.

i did the same as you all. after years of contentment, my lp copy became and elitist lp quite sudenly after an inexplicable and largely unjustified attack of gas. there wasn't anything wrong with the old guitar, but the elitist is just so much more right!

after that, coming here, playing a few in stores, researching and prowling for sale threads way, way too much, my beloved sherton ii (my #1 mind, you) and a friend somehow became a gibson 333. i was kinda saddened because i loved the sheraton so damned much, but i just had to have an elitist dot, and a burst one just wouldn't come up. the 333 fell into my lap as an even trade and i couldn't say no. i was having trouble trying to sell three guitars (including the sherry) to raise cash to throw at an elitist dot, but i was able to trade two of those for the 333 straight up. i jumped on it for the name recognition and resale value if nothing else, but it is a pretty good guitar. needs some work done on the wiring and a good set up, but afterwards, it could maybe on par with an elitist, i'd say. :-k

but i still want that sunburst elitist dot... too bad i'm getting along with the 333, although it has p90s and i need humbuckers...

Well' date=' in my limited experience with the choices, I guess I kind of inadvertently bracketed the "Elite/Elitist" category. My first Casino was an MIK in dark cherry that was quite candidly an impulse buy. My next was a JL Revolution, which is similar to the Elitist, but with a lacquer finish, some minor tweaks in dimension, and of course a pedigree of sorts.

In general, IMO, Epi is producing quality products ascross the board--and I'm not sucking up here for the sake of the forum, believe me. I thought when I got my Rev, I'd sell the Epi. Not so, she's still with me.

I subsequently acquired a JL 1965 Refurb during last Fall's blowout at MF--paying substantially less than a new Elitist costs today. Recently I sold the Rev, and picked up a Chinese-made Natural Casino.

So my Casino family consists of MIK, Elitist/USA, and MIC.

Yes, in my opinion, and to my ears, there is a difference in natural (unplugged) tone between the three--the JL '65 Refurb (as was the Rev) are warmer, more full sounding unplugged than the MIK or MIC. But how much of that is due to individual factors is hard to say. I'm guessing the wood choice/lacquer probably has the most to do with it.

But plugged in? Well even I can get near-identical tones out of all three.

So, is one version worth more than the next? Well, that's the age old question that keeps these boards going isn't it?

Having paid a little over $1K for the JL Refurb (which was obviously an overrun), there's no way I'd pay more for a mainstream Elitist. Would I pay new (or near new price) for a JL? No. OTOH, if I found an Elitist within a $200 or $300 of an MIK/MIC with a HSC, I'd jump. Other than that, I'd pass.

I kind of have the same experience with the Elitists. I have a MIK burst and natural Casino. I went to Naperville Music to see what they had about 2 years ago now and saw they had Elitists. I've known the guys for years so I brought my almost new MIK burst to play with the burst Elitist they had and a Revolution Casino and while they were both better not so much I wanted to trade up. I had the cash then, but a Casino is not my main guitar.

I played the Valensi while I was there as it was different from anything in my collection and they gave me a good deal as it had been hanging for some time. They had 2 a burst and the natural, mine, the burst sold right away but the natural waited for me. I'm very happy and have owned Gibsons through the years and now and it is as nice as any Gibson.

One of the guys here got the Revolution Casino finally. I thought about for a long time but it would just sit and be an investment I would never play so passed. I like the Epiphone design stuff more in the Elitist line. I know people here like the discontinued SG, but I would rather have that MIJ 61 with the right headstock in red. Don't care that it says Epiphone and not Gibson it just plain looks right.

Headstock shape has never been a factor in my guitar choices.

Man' date=' at least you're getting one! We're all sitting at home eating Oreos at our computers dreaming of getting that thing! =D> [/quote']

You sir, may be eating Oreos. I, on the other hand, am indulging in Smoked Oysters at my computer, and am quite happy with what I have ('ol Blue), thank you very much.

Well if it has all the same stuff as an Elitist and nitro finish............Give me that one.

I don't mind Epiphone stuff with Epiphone headstocks but an SG looks wrong without the right headstock. Now if I have the choice between all the same stuff as a Gibson but MIJ and marked Epiphone I'll take the Epiphone thanks.

I'm proud to say I own 9 elitists (2 LP Standards, 2 LP Studios, 1 LP Custom, 2 SGs, and 2 Dots) and wouldn't consider selling any of them. I'd kill for an elitist Firebird but I'm sure it will be a cold day in hell before they'd ever make one of those critters.

They are every bit as good as everyone says and I've never heard of anybody ever regretting buying one. In fact, the overwhelming number of elitist owners are as passionate about them as I am.

I would really like an elitist Sheraton but since they've discontinued the natural finish I'm not as excited as I once was. I've never been a huge fan of VS finishes.

Actually' date=' the Twisted Sister LP has them too. Not that many people seem to be into this guitar. [i have one.']

Thanks large for pointing that out, Suho. For some reason the Twisted Sister LP keeps falling off my radar...

We'd be fighting each other for head of the line to get one for sure.
