Hey Roswell I'm with you mate I'm with you' date=' six is enough for these old hands, you know OLD Dog new tricks, just takes L...O...N...G...E...R.......

What's the big deal about 7 strings? It's only the addition of a detuned 6th string

that forms a "bass pedal" for the guitar, not to mention the hassles of trying to get a 7string set

for it. Most of the action on a LP is on the first 4 strings, so even the low E and A

are not played that much, unless we are talking barre chords or similar or just using

it as a "drone" string..then why not another string and make it the full 8.

Now from a player's perspective..I have 4 fingers and a thumb on my fretting

hand...ok I can use the thumb on the 7th, but that means learning new chord

structures and my guitar teacher years ago, slapped my hand when the thumb

was curled over the fingerboard..he claimed it slowed you down when doing any

fast fretting...and he was right!

Now if they came up with a 7 string with a high A, then that might be a whole new

experience in music on a LP. The only problem with the high tuned E string that is

is prone to breakage on those hard picks or chord sweeps.

It's not a "Big Deal" my comment was more in jest than serious, hence the comment about age and learning. I've nothing against a 7 string guitar and admire anyone who can master one but for me six is just fine.

I agree with your comment about your guitar teacher, mine does the same.......

Hope this clears any up any misunderstanding.

Cheers

OK Doth' date=' you have me who are you talking about??

I think he was referring to my comment in my previous post about "most of the

action occurs on the first 4 strings"....ok..I'll clarify.. it also depends on your individual playing

style, the type of licks/ riffs, chords etc. Obviously most chord positions involve

the 5th and 6th string.

I wasn't trying to say that "you only use two thirds of the strings"...I was just commenting that on a LP, once you get

past the 12th fret, you are (more than likely) playing solo positions that involved

the first four strings after the 15th fret because on a single cut LP it's not

as convienient to reach the E+A, although you can still do it.

Hey carverman, thanks for that, I quickly scanned the posts last night but could not get what he as saying. I know what you mean about using the upper four, one solo that comes to mind which uses pretty much all six is Deep Purples Smoke on the water, that solo uses all six. There would be others for sure.

Cheers
