As I've never done this before, is there an existing type of tuner that I can just drop in without modification? I've searched around a bit but can't quite figure out which might work best. lostindesert Posted August 8, 2008 Share Posted August 8, 2008 I think you can't go wrong with Grover tuners. The Sheratons i once owned came with Grover tuners, but had no name on them. I got the ones with the imperial style stepped buttons.. looks incredibly classy and just a couple of bucks more. that would be 109G and the headstock, already classy, gets nearly snobbish! It puts all the other headstocks down and drinks all my champagne while I'm asleep. holes match perfectly. I had my stock tuners on for years without a complaint. but these things.. I tune twice as fast, and half as often. Sold two sets in here to guys who reported the same basic experiences.. really nice look.. and very well made tuner. I've got Grovers on my Guild acoustic and they're smooth and stay in tune beautifully, so they were my first choice--although after polishing the hardware, looks like I'll be needing chrome now. That's ok--the gold was fading at this point anyway. I agree about the 109's--very cool indeed. And I'll keep 'em away from the champagne! Thanks for the help! The Rotomatics have a threaded bushing and one little screw. Will the Imperials still fit on the headstock without to much modification? ontheroad97 Posted August 8, 2008 Author Share Posted August 8, 2008 I was wondering about this too, but the Grover 109's that Twang suggested have the step-style buttons but only one screw, so they're actually rotos and I'm assuming wouldn't need mods. While they're still a not bad tuner, they pale in comparison to the original US units, which are smoother, tighter, and just plain feel better. OR, are they offset, below and to the side? If they're directly below and centered, Grover's (Rotomatics) should work. Someone here, recently changed turners to "Carvin" tuners...and said it was a direct match. However, I don't know if they were the centered screws, or the offset variety? Maybe, someone with more experience with Carvin tuners, will know? Are you changing the originals, because they are bad, or just for "looks?" If it's purely cosmetic, you might be able to just change the tuner buttons, and not the whole tuner. I've done that, to several of my guitars, and it's worked out really well. Changing tuners as the guitar doesn't stay in tune that well and also for cosmetic reasons. I'm a Strat guy though, and I know many of the Gibsons I've played just don't stay in tune the same way unless I've just had bad luck, but figured I'd give it a go. I ended up replacing the Pings on one of them with Gotoh 18:1. I highly recommend those. Here is an auction for Gotoh tuners that would replace Grovers and have Grover style buttons. And all the epis I upgrade. the feel of these 109s is spot on.. smooth accurate solid..I have sperzels here, and schallers and gotohs, and I use the Grovers as first choice. The price is right and so is the performance. Good Gotohs are good.. I'd never knock them.. and the same with Sperzels.. The 109s will fit right into the sheraton. there are two imperial models, as noted..the kluson style back.. and the grover style. you can have the stepped buttons with either gibson/epi mounting.
