Ron G
Gig bags never made any sense to me. Period.
joeymetro
CASE! My wife played the Bass in H.S. Many years ago. She kept it all these years. Many moves. A few months ago I pulled it out restrung it and it is as good as new. It doesn`t have a scrath on it.
dubstar
not a major point, but I also like cases because they tend to have more character than gig bags, especially old ones that are slightly road worn...the last used guitar I purchased came with an epiphone full archtop hard case, perfect condition inside, a bit beat up outside, but certainly fine...however, it smells so bad, like chemical puke, some kind of off gassing, I suppose...so it sits in the attic and the guitar is in a cheap acoustic case, one of those flimsy ones, but it's OK for now... I wonder if I can get that smell out? it took about a month to get it off the guitar yuck : (

I sent 2 back to Sweetwater for that problem. I have one I bought for my G-400 in the Avatar. I have been putting bounce sheets in it for like a month, I think the smell is gone, but I'll know better in a few hours. I just took the bonce sheets out and opened it up. I'll see what it smells like a little later. I am a harshell case guy all the way, but I did buy some bags a few months ago. I bought some guitars a few months back, for not a lot of money. I bought a broken G-400 to fix and a Tele and Strat knock off. About $100 each, I bought them as project guitars. I didn't want to spend $70 for a case on a $100 guitar, so I started looking into gig bags. The ones I saw for $30-$35 were crap, hardly any padding in them at all. Then MF had a sale over Memorial Day, so I got some Musician's Gear gig bags for about $15 each. They are really pretty descent for gig bags, very well padded, but I have decided to bite the bullet and go with the hardshell cases for these guitars too. JefferySmith
This year, I've invested about $800 in buying...hardshell cases. The guy in the mail room thinks I've bought a bazillion guitars, but I've been buying needed protection for two Dobros, a Fender Jaguar, an Ibanez short scale, the recent SG '61, and a Strat. Now I have a big pile of empty gig bags.

JefferySmith
Looks like this isn't a debate after all. The last thing you want to use a gigbag for is a gig. Think of it as expensive packaging material when first buying a guitar.
brad1
For me a gig bag is used for storing a low-end guitar or "project" guitar in the back of a closet or garage. If a guitar leaves my residence, it has to go in a case. I just worry so much less about it. And to me, that's worth the price alone.
Just Strum
Anyone hear anything about these? http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Musicians-Gear-Durafoam-ShockResistant-Electric-Guitar-Case?sku=540610 They seem nice, especially if you are taking lessons and use books as part of your lessons - nice storage compartment on side of case. Yeah, the extra storage really comes in handy.
pohatu771
This is my family portrait, when they're "sleeping:" Squier Strat in Fender Deluxe Gig Bag, Fullerton acoustic in Roadrunner Dreadnought Gig Bag, Gibson LG-0 in 1965 Gibson case, Casino in Epiphone/TKL 335 case, Fender Strat in Musician's Gear vintage tweed case. I'll admit, I sacrificed protection for looks (just a bit) on the Strat case. I did modify it, a bit, however... the neck support block is styrofoam. I took it out and replaced it with wood. After being used for some time, the support with give to the neck, letting it slid further down towards the hinge side. When it's wood, it doesn't do that. I know a bass player using the same case (for bass), and the neck slides down about three inches. Both of the bags I have are high-quality. The Fender has extra padding on the headstock. I will be buying a hard case for the Gibson after it is repaired, because I'd like to be able to play with it.
alcorn429
Gotta have a case. I am way to rough on the guitar in transport.

Bill V
All seven of my guitars are in cases. They do take up space, but still, I'm leaving nothing to chance. By the way, RotcanX, I've bee GASing for a Tele just like that for while. Same color scheme as my Strat.
