Congrats on the SG.

I've loved SG's and Strat's as long as I can remember' date=' now that I have one of each I can pretty much play anything I want.[/quote']

I had all but decided to get a Les Paul Studio in cherry red until the SG showed up on ebay. Excellent timing.

Yeah, Jeff....it's all YOUR fault! LOL!!! But, I must say..."Thanks, man!"

I wonder if our friend (Ant7629) in England got his, yet?

You out there, Ant?! Did you get your SG?

How do you like the faded SG, Dubstar? Did you put the pickup covers on it?

They're so reasonably priced, it's going to be hard to resist...now, that I have the SG

"Bug" again. LOL! I understand the necks are '50's (beefy) style? Are they "neck heavy,"

because of that? (Sorry, if these questions are "lame," but being so far from any music

stores, I only see photos, mostly...on MF or other on line sites.)

the neck doesn't seem beefy to me...nowhere near as thin as my casino, but close to the elitist les paul and certainly

comfortable...a non-issue, I guess you would say...and definitely not one bit "neck heavy...

I have a friend who is in a fairly successful and well thought of band and he plays a 68/69 standard...he played mine

about a month ago and thought it was a good guitar and really liked the neck (upside down and way better than me LOL)...so I think just like everything

else, you have to look around or order from a place that allows returns...living in the NYC area, I see a lot of SGs and I

have a difficult time reconciling the criticism of the faded series that is common here with my guitar...if you go to the

"lefties" thread, you can read what modifications I made (mainly cosmetic)...good luck with your new MIJ!

Well, I know it's a matter of personal preference, in a lot of what we like/do,

with our guitars, but I think adding the pickup covers "classed it up," IMHO.

I'm sure I would do the same. But, others would leave them uncovered, I'm sure.

It's all good! The one thing I would like to see Gibson (in general) do..and maybe

the new "Pleck" treatment will accomplish this, in a mass production situation...is

to do a better job, overall on "fret work!" I've had to have 2 of my LP's dressed,

because...from the factory, the frets were so sharp edged and beefy, they were like

"Road Blocks!" A good dressing took care of it, but one shouldn't have to do that,

on a new guitar. Again, just my opinion. My Epiphones, have ALL had great fret work!

So...???

What year did they make SGs with minis? I see you changed them to the SDs too. I put the same ones in my Riviera and love them. How are they in an SG?

That was a 72' SG special and it was an absolute screamer with those duncans. It was a huge improvement over the stock black mini hums that were very microphonic. I was also able to get the action really low on that one by using firebird type pickup rings....never should have sold that one...but I've got a pretty good playin' inexpensive replacement here!DSC00093.jpg

I like the mini's in SG's.....Firebird tones with SG playability! I always found firebirds kinda awkward....for me anyway.

Thanks for the info.

I started as a Ric guy years ago then got into 335s and SGs, the HB sound. I have known about the SGs with P90s for years but never knew until now they had SGs with minis too.

I also wish Epiphone would offer more options with the stock line or do limited CS runs that mean something like a G400 with minis, I would change them to Duncans, instead of just changing paint colors.

Thanks again and really nice looking SG!

Congrats on your new SG. Either you love them or you hate them. I love mine, both of them. Okay, they're "G-400s", but I still love them. I love the access to the upper frets, and I just love how they look. But then, either you do or you don't.

I really have never had any problem with the Maestro causing my G-400 to go out of tune, and I use it a lot. I would love to get a Gibby CS with maestro, but that ain't gonna happen. I really can't justify 3 grand for a guitar at this point in my life.

i have a goldtop copy with mini humms. they have a definate sound of their own. i think it's becoming my favourite guitar.

I can see that happening for sure!:-

jcwillow777 what tends to happen with the vibrola is that the metal fatigues and when they get a little older they are notoriously hard to keep in tune..not to mention verry touchy with temp and humidity changes as well. I've actually seen a few vintage SG's thrown offstage by some pissed off southern rockers! I'm happy yours works so well...I hope it stays that way for you.

Well, ANYone that throws a "Vintage" SG (or any other guitar) off the stage (unless there's someone there, to catch it) is an idoit! Hand it to your guitar tech, and have him hand you your spare! "Rock Stars" just love looking "cool," and feeding the audience what they think we want. But, it's their guitar, they can do whatever they want...stupid as it may be. I guess we can blame Townsend and Hendrix for that. LOL!

Maestro's, like any other part, can be replaced! If that ruins it's "collector's value," then don't use it. I guess I'm

much to "precious," about my guitars. I would never knowingly or willingly put them in harms way, no matter what

went "wrong" with them. I'd just get it fixed! ;>b But, that's just me...

I'm not saying it was sane behavior....lets just say there was alot of chemical enhanced behavior going on...but I actually saw a vintage SG hit the ground for being out of tune in Winston/Salem NC at one outdoor show.......OUCH!

That same guitar was launched by it's owner on a couple of ocasions.:- ...sometimes caught...sometime not!

Oh, I know...and, I understand the "dynamic" or even the "show" aspect. I just never

enjoyed that, even when I was young enough that it might have been "cool!" I always

thought: "Man, if you're going to destroy it, give it to me, instead!" LOL! Now if it's a POS,

used specifically for that "show element," fine...but a Nice "Vintage" guitar?... No way!

That would have been very hard (for me) to watch. ;>(

The SG is my second favorite guitar (second to the Casino) and I've got major GAS for one, but the economy is bad, and therefore both the Band and the Band-in-a-Box businesses are a little off :-

I like them red, with the smaller pickguard and covered pups. Neck binding would be a must since I often play in dark places or stages with glaring spotlights.

I've been drooling for a Gibson faded for a while, but I just can't justify the expense. Especially since I will probably always only take the Casino to the gig. After all, one guitar, one sax, one flute, two wind synths, one PadKontrol, and for Leilani one Parker, one Thunder Tactile MIDI controller, and for both of us one PA amp, two speakers, two monitors, one mixer, 5 sound modules, 3 computers, one sonic maximizer, one effects unit, and various stands are enough to schelpp to the gig.

Oh but like I said, the SG is my second favorite guitar.

Third in the looks department would be the Strat, but I don't like the longer scale, shorter neck radius, fatter neck, harder to mute bridge, and vol/tone control scheme as well as the Gibson design.

As a multi-instrumentalist, I have to spread my GAS over quite a few instruments. Anybody have next week's FL lottery numbers?

Oh, and as soon as you get your camera back, we need pictures!

CB I feel the same way ...and I felt like making a diving catch on more than one ocassion....but sometimes you just have to watch and say to yourself what an idiot!......hey it's rock n roll after all and sometimes anything goes! As stupid as that sounds ...it's true!](*,)

So....Ant7629...did you get your Epi Japan '61 SG' date=' yet?!

We haven't heard anything from you...

CB[/quote']

Hey CB, still waiting for mine. The guy said it would take about two weeks so I am hoping for the end of the week or maybe the beginning of next week. I t just hop e I am not at work when it arrives!

This thread is giving me serious GAS though. :D/

Glad you are enjoying yours! How are you finding the pick ups? I think above all, that is the thing that has me most curious. I have never played an Elitist, but I used to own a Gibson SG and the pick ups on there were VERY hot....

Well, there you are...I was wondering if you'd received your SG yet? The wait is the worst part. LOL!

Well, it's been so long, since I had a "Gibson" SG, that I can only compare it, to my Gibby LP's...and

it seems not overly hot, but not puny either. I've done a bit of messing around with it, in the Marshall AVT,

and my Fender Blues Junior, and Hot Rod Deluxe. Fender and Marshall are Different tones, of course...

but, all were nice! The sustain was more than I remembered, so that was a nice surprise. As I mentioned,

I haven't had an SG since the late '60's...(DUMB, I know!), so it's hard to remember what that one was really

like. I'll be most interested in your evaluation, since you have a Gibson, to compare it to. But, I love mine!

Haven't put it down, except to eat, sleep, and/or post here, since I got it....LOL! It's not as "dark" sounding

(to me, anyway) as a Les Paul...which I kind of expected, due to it's thinner body, and not being "capped"

like most carved top LP's are...the exception being the "Mahogany" Studio model.

I must admit, I've got a bad case of "SG Fever," now!:D/ So, who knows where THAT will lead?!

(To an even emptier wallet, no doubt!) LOL!

Cheers,

CB
