Vintage headstock comparisons

For those unawares... the current "Kat" range of Epiphones feature a headstock that's based on vintage design.

Here's a photo of the original style of headstock that inspired it.

And here's one from the new Alleykat:

I dig it when Epiphone goes through its unique past for inspiration for new models. I'd love to see more new designs along this line of thinking.

Admittedly, the headstock pales in comparison to the original, still... it's the thought that counts ](*,)

I've always liked the Kat headstock.

I like the shape and the "bikini" logo much better than the headstock of my Casino.

Actually, I think it should be on all Epi guitars, except for the Sheris and the others with the big vine in the headstock. But I'm sure my personal opinion doesn't carry that much weight with the Epi management.

And I must admit, I like the vintage headstock even better.

I might have Elitists on the brain' date=' but the original headstock above reminds of the Elitist one - save for the slight difference in the 'rounding' at the top.[/quote']The Elitist headstock is actually a near-perfect copy of the original Masterbilt headstock from the 1930s.

Someone ought to take a little ivory enamel to the metal logo and see how that would make it look.

Which Elitist headstock are you guys talking about?

There's this on the Casino:

  • 1 year later...

And, even the standard "Hourglass" Epi headstock isn't like it was, on Kalamazoo Epi's. The upper bout on the Kalamazoo versions was slighty wider.

See my '66 Casino, below:

Now, compare to my Korean Riviera:

And, even my "Assembled in USA" Sheraton (which is Vintage (Kalamazoo) correct) is different

still, than today's Elitist or standard Korean or Chinese Sheratons.
