Casino or Dot 335

I have been in the process of selling off some electric guitars, trying to get down to one that will do everything. I mostly just record at home or play a little at church. I am also getting older and just need to downsize in general. I think I may narrow it down to an Elitist Casino or an Elitist 1963 Dot 335. I had a Casino once but sent it back to MF because of bridge rattles and a selector switch issue. I have never even held a Dot 335. Most music dealers in my area only stock the cheaper Epiphones and that makes it hard to try one out. So please give me some feedback, which one the Dot or the Casino (or other suggestions).........

My gut says Dot over Casino, just on the versatility issue, but there are intangibles (the Dot is only available in natural nowadays, and the Elitist Casino may be discontinued very soon). But if I were you, I'd either get the Elitist Casino (since they are on borrowed time) or the Elitist Sheraton (since it looks better and is available in vintage sunburst). How's that for logic?

Getting down to one that will do everything, as you say, between those two. IMO I would choose the 335 DOT. I have a Casino and really like it but I belive the DOT is more versatile, or rather I think humbuckers are more versatile than P-90s to tell the truth....sure do love the P-90S too though.

As far as only having the "cheaper Epiphones" available for you. IMO you should still be able to get an idea of the differences between the two.

edit//..jeffery you beat me to it..HA.

Great minds think alike.

I will also cast a vote for the 335 Dot. In my opinion (although limited experience) it is one of the most versatile guitars available. I'm not playing down the Casino, because I would love one, but if I was to have one guitar it would be a 335.

Since I have limited experience (2 years), I've questioned others about the best guitar to have, whether it would be owning one guitar or included in a collection and almost everyone of them say the 335. Take a look at the music genre that use the 335 and that is an indication of it's versatility.

As for the Epi Dot, don't underestimate it's value when compared to the Gibson 335. A friend has a 335 and I took my Epi Dot over there and besides the ply of the pick guard, there was little difference. Sure the 335 was better, but I'm not sure the difference in cost justified the difference - then again, that is just personal opinion and I am not advanced as you are (no recording to begin with).

So, in summary - 335!!!

Casino Pros: lighter, nice neck, wonderful P-90 tone, available in Natural and Sunburst.

Cons: Limited upper fret access, feedback at high volume, noisy (P-90) pickups.

Dot Pros: Better upper fret access, humbucker (quiet) pickups, classic looks.

Cons: Much heavier weight than Casino, One color (Natural), limited availability.

Sheraton Pros: Stunning looks, great neck, good upper fret access, mini-humbuckers

(good cross between humburcker tone/quiet, and P-90 articulation).

Cons: More expensive.

This is on "Elitist" models...but similar on the regular versions...except the regular Sheri doesn't have Mini-humbuckers.

Folks here have all kinds of preferences, to each model, for various reasons. Best find one of each, and see what appeals

to you. But, I (personally) think the Elitist Sheraton, is the best of both, even if it is a bit more money.

I don't agree that P90's are less versatile than buckers...I'd say the opposite in fact. Unless- we're talking about metal playing. And then I concede the point. Too much feedback w/ that kind of gain. But for blues, jazz, country, rockabilly and any rock and roll sub genre(from roots to classic to hard and in all points between) I think the P90 has it covered as well or better, 'cos it can mimic Gibsons and Fenders traditional sounds and still sound like its own thing.

Can't deny that 335's span more genres, or that P90's are noisier than buckers either, but P90's gotta whole lotta mojo IMO. More than buckers.

So I'd go Cassino, or if you decide Epi dot for buckers, I'd reccomend a Sheraton II instead. Much nicer.

(later) *then* I see you are talking Elitists....still, I'd vote Casino for all the same reasons...but an Elitist Dot is definitely nicer than a regular Sheraton II! So I guess scratch that =D>
