Stevie Nazarenie
i just had a look at the old pickups i have. i'm going to put this from a 1987 sg in an epi. one looks good. i am lost on the wiring. the one from the epi i am swapping it for has just 2 wires and i could do that! except i can only see 1 wire. i has pat no 2,737,842 on the back by the way. a kind of metal chain mail all the way down the wire. inside is a black material and inside that is a white material. but there is wire that comes out of the white part. where are the others? help. RotcanX
That 'chain mail' is actually a braided shield wire. It acts as the second wire which you usually solder to the back of the volume pot:
Stevie Nazarenie
thanks. i just finished it sounds very good. but then it is on a par with whats already in it. ie. fake epi pickups? they actually sound good altough microphonic! perhaps a little clearer though. nice to hear these after all years just to see where i was back in the 80's. i had the idea these were weak... good sounds through a marshall mg10. so far no microphonics! Stevie Nazarenie
are there any differences between the treble and bass pickups on an sg standard? these are mine from 87. but they are not marked with t or b. do they have the same amount of winds? can they be interchanged with each other with no problems? Stevie Nazarenie
i just soldered in the other paf. it's not working. it seems the braiding has come away from the base plate. i need to solder the braid via a link wire but to what? i looked at the other pup but i'm still none the wiser. Biff
You have to open up the pickup to solder the wire. Check out the images on this page for advice. And be very careful...
Stevie Nazarenie
http://au.geocities.com/guitarcircuits/fourconductor/fourconductor.html that looks useful. i will give that a go when i get a chance.:-/ i see some rust there though. what does it do tonaly? i like the idea of coil taps. easy on a fender scratchplate but on a epi type? i'm not drilling it!
