Svet Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 I'll take pictures once I do the string change. It won’t be for a little while though as I have not been playing much because I just have too much going on. That case you're describing sounds right and that is what mine came in too. I concur with your friend and I too will probably purchase a better case for storing my R9. While it is very elegant it just doesn't seem like it protects all that well. This really shouldn't be an issue as it doesn't leave my house however.
JEPI Posted September 9, 2008 Author Posted September 9, 2008 Very nice....those are actually some pretty rare pickups to boot! Thanks - Dang, everything about guitars is sooooooo subjective........I posted questions about this '59 RI over at the Gibson Forum as well and did a search on Bill Lawrence circuit board pups....... BLAMMO!!! .... "THEY'RE CRAPPY,,,,COMPLETE SHITE...WORTHLESS,,,,, I CHANGED MINE OUT AS SOON AS GOT THE GUITAR HOME" on and on.......... They seem to work OK for me....... lol Maybe its just me... I think my stock Epi pups sound great too..........J
stan 58 Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 I don't know about your PUs but the Bill L. PUs I have are great! Stan.
Ricochet Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 It is actually called Tobacco which I've found is occasionally interchanged with "Ice Tea". All the pics I've taken still make it look a bit reddish. But' date=' there's no red or cherry in it at all... [/quote'] All those different colours designations sure are confusing when they look exactly the same! Another thing he told me - It came with a brown case w/ gold Gibson logo and purple lining which he didn't like and opted for a standard black with gray lining. (Nimrod!!!)... Hehehe...Actually they're supposed to come with the brown/purple case till 86, and after that with the black/grey, so it's 'vintage correct'.:-) Did Gibson just take a Standard and call it a RI"??? Is this a 20 year old bait and switch? Another gem of curiosity - The tenon does not intrude into the pup cavity like on my Epi!!!! YET, it is confirmed a RI from their files. FYI, the list on it was $2600, so he did get $400 knocked off. Don't worry. It's a 'Les Paul Reissue'. Don't call it R9. It isn't. According to the LesPaulforum The Les Paul Reissues made from '83 till '93 didn't have a long tenon. That's why Gibson refrains from calling it a '59 RI. It had a 50% premium price on the regular Standard and it was sold for approx $1500.
JEPI Posted September 10, 2008 Author Posted September 10, 2008 Ric - Thanks for the additional info.... $1500 ???? It was listed for $2600 and he paid $2200.... I definitely will not pass that info on to him..... Yeah, definitely not a R9. Regarding the long tenon, I find it CRAZY that my late '80's Samick Epi has a long tenon and this one doesn't. Whatever, I will be selling it long before I do my Epi anyhow.................J
layboomo Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Thanks - Dang' date=' everything about guitars is sooooooo subjective........I posted questions about this '59 RI over at the Gibson Forum as well and did a search on Bill Lawrence circuit board pups....... I think my stock Epi pups sound great too..........J [/quote'] I said they were rare....I didn't say they were great! Yeah some guy's liked em...some didn't...so what else is new right? I have a problem with the R-9 thing too......R-9 says custom shop to me and ,although it's a pretty burst, that isn't a custom shop level guitar for some of the reason's mentioned. Given it's age and condition I still think you could get a couple grand+ for it.
