Has anyone ever put humbuckers on a Casino?

This is for the far future, but I'm curious.

 

I love the Casino, I love the shape, I love the light weight, I love the P90s and I don't play loud enough to have a feedback problem.

 

As much as I love my P90s, and although I can get close to a humbucker sound with my Zoom G1X pedal, there are times when I want to have the authentic humbucker sound.

 

I have a guitar with humbuckers (LTD/ESP/EC50), it has a great neck, it has a great sound, but it is heavy on my shoulder.

 

So I was wondering if anybody has ever put humbuckers on a Casino? If so: (1) how difficult was it (2) what did it involve and (3) how did it sound?

 

I don't want to mess with my Casino, but if this is possible, and if in the future I can afford another used "project" Casino, it might be right for me.

 

Just curious.

compromise, between P-90 tone, and humbucker tone. Not really either. I have

P-100's in my LP Junior Lites, and actually like them, for their own tone. But, I (personally)

have never even entertained the idea, of Humbuckers in a Casino. But, that's just me!

Epi P-90s have shielded 2-conductor wire. That means it would be fairly simple to reverse the magnets on one pickup (if necessary) to make the pair of pickups rw/rp; which means you could run that to a series/parallel switch on a push/pull pot and run both coils in series like a big humbucker. Might sound good, might not.

If you want to keep the look and you really feel inclined, you could 'fit' a humbucker in a dogear cover(it doesn't really fit and involves cutting up the bobbins and the cover). Or use minihumbuckers if you want to keep it simple.

If you don't feel tinker savvy I expect you could buy a customjobby from Lollar or Novak.

I agree.

 

Anyway, the "humbucking" sound people want to achieve only works on heavy guitars - that's why they are heavy. So there's not much point in it I think.

 

One of my projects is getting a Höfner Verithin, that's a lightweight guitar with humbuckers (though that one is very thin ;-). I don't expect it to sound like a humbucking guitar though ! ;-)

Ric what I mean by that is that it would be one thing if it WERE just a straight pickup swap....but any woodworking mods to the Casino for a humbucker retrofit would be a mistake IMHO. That's all I was trying to say. Getting someone to custom wind a direct drop in...sure I have no problem with that.

Don't worry Lay. I was just being cheeky... I would never recommend carving up a perfectly good Casino. Hence the suggestion to use a modified PU.

CB[/quote'] When you say P-100, are you talking about the stacked single coil that comes on the Gibson Billy Joe Les Paul Junior? I have contaced Gibson and several dealers and was told the only way to get that pickup is to buy the whole guitar. If this is the same one and you now how to get one, please repost!!!!!!!!

Well, again, Gibson has changed policies.#-o One used to be able to order them, as replacement pickups.

Seymour Duncan makes a "stacked" P-90, that would be essentially the same. Or, check on E-bay. The P-100's

show up there, once in a while. Most online stores sell the Duncan's.

DiMarzio has a series of Humbuckers in P-90 form. They don't show them as dogears but I would assume that they are available. You probably could go as hot or as standard as you want with these.

 

In the latest Eagles CD there is a picture of Glen Frey playing a 330 with dogeared pickups with two sets of polepieces.

 

What might be really interesting for a different sound is to go to Tom (TV) Jones and see if he will put one of his pickups in a dogeared package.

First of all, I am not going to modify my beautiful NAT Casino nor am I going to hack up my ES-330. I love them both.

 

Second of all, I absolutely LOVE the P90 sound, but it doesn't work for everything :-( I have a Humbucker guitar (LTD-Faux-LP) but it weighs a ton. After trading in my Faux-Strat for the Casino I got spoiled with a lightweight guitar.

 

Third of all, none of this is going to happen very soon. The last 8 years of a Republican monopoly on the government has simply hurt the economy too much. People are having fewer parties, people are buying less software, night clubs are scaling back the music, and a few night clubs that were happening clubs importing live music have closed.

 

So right now, I simply can't justify buying another guitar, there are other higher priorities for my money. Perhaps if we vote in a "regime change" the economy might pick up.

 

I didn't think about the weight factor. I like lightweight guitars. My partner's Parker (7 lbs) sounds great - (that might be an answer for me). I actually started thinking about this when I saw an ad for the IMHO overpriced Gibson Johnny A Signature guitar (a hollow guitar with humbuckers).

 

It's not a P90 noise issue either. I don't mind the slight hum I get on my Casino. Using a direct box through the PA, it's hardly noticeable.

 

So if Emily Remler can put humbuckers on a 330, and the Johnny A guitar has humbuckers on a hollow guitar, I suppose I could do the same on a Casino.

 

Dog-ear 'buckers sound like the best answer (if I can find them). Then if it doesn't work, I can always undo it without scarring the guitar.

 

But again, this is for the future.

Sure you can, as long as you dont expect it to sound anything like a Les Paul. My ES-175 has humbuckers and that's a lightweight (it just doesn't sound "heavy"). Don't forget you'll probably also have to change the electronics.

 

On it's own it's a good idea, if you could find a cheap Casino.

 

My guess is that you will get a clean sound, almost like an accoustic.

Since you are talking about getting a new guitar to do this to anyway, you might look at a Renaisance Custom by Peerless, maker of many great Epiphones.

 

It is a hollow body guitar with humbuckers. Occasionally you will see them pop up on Craigslist, especially in LA.
