String Buzz? Fret Buzz?

Well this may strike as a retarded question I guess but I've only been playing a year, so I don't know everything. Anyway I have been noticing a fuzzy type sound when I hit my b string I am guessing its either string or fret buzzing I am not exactly sure, also how can I fix this.

Thanks in advance

open or fretted?

if it's open. then it's either a nut slot.. which could be too wide, or to low. Or it could be a noise at the bridge saddle. same deal.. with the added

attraction of burr possibility.

so first off.. look at the b string nut in the slot.. can it move side to side or is it held firm?

press the b string at the 3rd fret.. there should be about a hairs distance between the bottom of the b string and the 1st fret while you hold it at the third.

That would be, in order, a too wide slot, or a too deep slot.

another thing that can happen is the break point.. the last part of the nut, or saddle, the string touches.

saddles, being metal, can have burrs, but either of them can be tapered down from the string.. letting it vibrate against the edge of the nut

slot of saddle groove.

also there can be a tiny metal burr.. saddles are tumbled..that is they are put in barrel and it's turned. this rubs them together until they are smooth.. but it doesn't always work out.

so check to see if there's a burr.

Of course, it could be a sympathetic vibration.. so tighten all your screws down firmly, and try to be sure it's not a noise coming not from the b string, but from the b string being played.

if it happens open or fretted, you look toward the saddle and they sympathetic vibration idea.

if it happend only on the open string, you look to the nut.

That's enough for now.. check it out!

Make sure the pickguard hasn't moved a bit and vibrating against a pickup. I found that one on several guitars now. Can drive you crazy because sometimes it only vibrates at particular frequencies.
