Stevie Nazarenie Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 what are your thoughts on the sound difference between these 2. i'm debating if i should put some p90's in a mini humm (yes 2 m's) guitar leaving my mini humm sound to a guitar i have coming in the post. it has coil tapping. are mini humms and split humbuckers close enough to knock the mini humm guitar on the head and put p90's in it? i like the sound of this one but i guess i could always go back to it though anyway...
lostindesert Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Split humbuckers (one coil working) sound more like Fender single coils. Mini humbuckers have their own sound like a scaled down regular humbucker. You could try the series/paralel option with humbuckers. P-90's have their own sound also, like a Fender single coil on steroids. What pups are on your guitar(what guitar) right now ? Not totaly clear to me after reading your post. Peter
charlie brown Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I have a Les Paul Deluxe ('76) with mini-humbuckers, and a coupld of Les Paul Junior Lites, with P-100's (stacked humbucker) in P-90 package. They're both great, at what THEY do....but, they're enough different, that I don't know that I would "replace" the mini's for the stacked! Since you say you have another guitar in shipping, that has the minis, then you might want to try the stacked? The stacked are not as "bright" sounding as the mini's, but without the mid-range "Quack" that a real single coil P-90 has. Some people hate the P-100's for that reason, alone. I actually like them, but I don't try to get a P-90 tone from them. I exploit what they do, themselves. They're almost a cross between the mini and a P-90! Not as bright as the mini, not as mid-range...or "quacky" as a P-90, but have a nice tone, on their own. As to what YOU prefer, only you will know. There is, of course, some EQ things that can be done, on the amp, to compensate...either way. The differences are hard to explain, without actually being able to hear it. If you need that mid-range tone, that P-90's excel in, get those. They do have a bit of "noise" though. The Stacked version will be dead quiet, like the mini...but without as bright of a 'bite," in the upper frequencies. Gosh, I hope this wasn't to confusing, and will help...some, anyway? CB
Stevie Nazarenie Posted September 20, 2008 Author Posted September 20, 2008 the gold top copy has mini humms. i like it alot. i'm just on a budget thinking how i can try to get a p90 guitar sound for real. i guess a gfs mean 90 would be the cheapest way to get to try it out. bridge or neck? i'm not sure which is best for me. bridge might be good and i could always fall back into putting it in my strat copy. but i really wanted a stacked p90 that is splitable like in some of the guitars i've seen. for noise control. i'm not sure how much they are. obviously they only come as soapbars. so it's them or the p rails which are too much money...
charlie brown Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 P-100's are harder to find. The Duncan stacked version are about 100 bucks (US) each. So...??? CB
Stevie Nazarenie Posted September 20, 2008 Author Posted September 20, 2008 it's all sound experimentation at the moment. one of the guitars that appealled to me most was an eastwood (who?) p90 special. i heard a demo on youtube. come on mod don't delete it. i liked it better than the others i have heard. if the p90 was stacked and had a roll control or coil tap wouldn't it be as bright? i was hoping so.
