Dot Deluxe vs. Dot

I went to Guitar Center today to look at a Dot. When I got there, I noticed they had two Dot Deluxe guitars there that were $30 less than the regular Dot.

What is a Dot Deluxe and is there anything about it that makes it worth not as much as the regular Dot? It looked nicer and felt about the same.

They had five Dots with a tag price of $399 and two sunburst Deluxe Dots with a tag price of $369.

B stock maybe?

I just went to their site and they have two of the Dots listed at $339, but I don't see reason for the price reduction. The two pictured at the top are available for as low as $339. The rest are $399. Personally I wouldn't buy a guitar pick from GC, but that's just my feeling towards that store.

I would take a good look at it and if it is some sort of finish flaw, I would snag one if that is what you are looking for. I have a Dot and I love it. Just checking this out now is having me gas for a red one, or a natural one, or a...

I bought a Deluxe at MF last year for $300 while the regular Dot was $400. It was suddenly marked down in price and I jumped on it. As has been said, the only difference appears to be gold hardware and the type of finish. The detail level of finish is a bit spotty in the F hole area but I think that could be the case with a regular Dot. If you like it, or if you like the price, get it!

Thanks for the replies. I prefer the way the Deluxe looks and it plays the same as the regular Dot. The two I looked at at GC also seemed a bit lighter than the regular Dot.

I was just wondering why the Deluxes were $30 less. I think I'll stop by and pick one up.

If the Deluxes have been hanging there for a while, they may still be marked at the pre-9/1 price increase.

GC in Birmingham Al. currently has a Deluxe for the same price as a standard Dot....I asked why the same price & that is what I was told.

Thats also how I got my Sheraton II for $530

Been a very long time since I played a Dot (late '90s perhaps.) I've been itching for a Sherry, but then a Dot is a lot cheaper, and might satisfy my semi-hollow cravings...

Few questions:

Does the Dot still have a neck like a baseball bat?

What are the p/ups like? Are they the standard Epi alnico Vs that turn up in G-400s and so on?

Tonally, just how different is a 2008 Dot to a 2008 Sheraton?

My Dot is a Samick-made model, and the neck is more "60's" than "50's". I swapped out the PUPs for P90's.

The difference is that they have gold hardware and the 57 humbuckers. They sound way nicer than the stock Dot hums. If they had the color you like I would jump all over one.

One of the most commeon mods on Dots are the pups and these 57's are really nice!

I respectfully disagree about the neck. The most recent DOT's I have played are more 50's sized than 60's. I have large hands and I can not play a Sherry, a Casino or a standard Riviera because my fingers get tied up on the slim/fast 60's (whatever they are called) neck. The most recent DOT's I have tried (I think they were Chinese) had a much nicee (for me) roomier neck. My EPI Riviera Jorma K is a Deluxe and has a very similar neck to the newer Dot's.

The pups are functional everyday generic hums on the DOT's. I would trade them out. If you can find a Dot Deluxe (Has gold hardware) or Jorma Kaukonen Riviera Deluxe they comes with Epi's '57 Classic Alnico V pickups. You can cover a lot of territory with these hums. They aren't exactly like the Gibby 57's but darn close.

'

Right now there are some Jorma Kaukonens on e-bay and there are apparently some good deals on DOT DEluxe's at some of the Big Box on-line stores.
