AS90 Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Im thinking of buying one of these, are they any good?
JefferySmith Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Im thinking of buying one of these' date=' are they any good?[/quote']They don't seem to produce much GAS around here, but (like you), I am so comfortable playing the SG models, expanding in that direction is tempting. The problem is that I've never heard anyone say that they really need that third pickup.
chrisprice Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 They are nice guitars but before you commit to buy, have a look on Ebay for an Epiphone Japan '61 SG. There's one or two up for grabs at the mo. Manufactured for the Jap home-market only, these are in a totally different league. You'll pay a bit more, but nothing like the price of a vintage re-issue Gibson......Chris
TheX Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 The 3rd pickup is always in my way, but I'm sure that different people have different methods and it may not bother you at all.

jcwillow777 Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 I'm sure it is a nice guitar. That one doesn't do anything for my personally, but I was really tempted to get the white Custom G-400 with Maestro a while back when it was available. But then I really love having a Maestro on a G-400.

But, at the time, there were more pressing issues, to be dealt with. "Life" can sure get in the way of buying guitars, now and then. ;>b CB
custer Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 IF I was going to buy a guitar with three pick ups this would be the one. A friend of mine had one for awhile. He seemed to have a problem getting use to the controls, however it sounded good.
Prospero Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 There's a couple of guys on this forum that have a G400 Custom and swear by them. I myself GAS after it... except I wish it had a black-pickguard. I can get over the gold hardware, but the white pickguard ruins it for me. Nothing an aftermarket replacement couldn't fix anyway. Still the Sheraton and Casino come first. edit: this one on ebay is making me seriously reconsider my priorities, though.
Bender 4 Life Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 My cousin just bought 1, used, and absolutely raves about it. He's been playing about 10 yrs, and is currently building a dedicated home recording studio. I've not played it yet, but his judgement/taste/ear for tone, is usually pretty good.

Charles Obscure Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Im thinking of buying one of these' date=' are they any good?[/quote']I have the black one. I like the look and the sound. For me, the third pickup adds an extra dimension to the sound. I don't have problems with it being in the way, as I've backed it down slightly under my picking depth without a negative effect on tone. I've always wanted the black & gold LP Custom until I actually played one. They are too heavy for my taste. I saw a pretty good deal on the G400, and since I've always wanted an SG, it was a logical choice. I think they're darn impressive looking!
stan 58 Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 I've had mine for 8 years and just love it. I always get comments on it's looks and playabily is great. I can't recomend it enough. Never had trouble with picking and controls are not hard to figure out, for me anyhow. I't doesn't get much respect around here, but who cares You'll love it. Stan.
stan 58 Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Hanks Custer! Three Korean beautys if I say so myself. Stan.
stan 58 Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Another nice thing about the SG custom is that you get both an SG & a Les Paul, Two in one! Stan.
custer Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Gotta tell ya Stan, I've been GASsing for an SG and I'm thinking a custom maybe the way to go.
