Demigawd Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I just noticed the stock nut on one of my guitars is cracked, so I need some opinions on a new nut. I am looking at the Graphtech nuts but which would you guys recommend the Tusq or the Trem-Nut?
SkEpTiKaL Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 TUSQ is supposed to be pretty good. Man-made bone-type material, supposed to have less "dead" spots than bone because of the man-made factor. Graphtech is good if you want a Graphite nut (personal preference). Never heard of the Trem-Nut but it sounds like some kind of locking nut maybe? I'm too lazy to research it. Pretty much goes like this: TUSQ = Bone Substitute Graphtech = Graphite Which do you like better?
Whitmore Willy Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I ordered 1 of each from guitarpartsdepot last week. Supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I'll let you know what I think when I get them. I did order the pre slotted. (lazy I guess) The thing that I did notice is that most places sell 3/16" width. These were listed specific for Epiphone at 1/4".
Demigawd Posted September 28, 2008 Author Posted September 28, 2008 I really don't have a preference at this point all my guitars still have the stock plastic nut, so I'm hoping to step up to something better with this repair. From what I can tell Graphtech is just the company name they have some nuts that are Tusq and one called the Trem-nut which seems to be some graphite Teflon hybrid or something.
TheX Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 TUSQ = Bone Substitute Graphtech = Graphite Which do you like better? I have guitars with both and no complaints about either.
Dave Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I've only tried brass and bone. Not that much difference and it's only noticeable if you play open strings. If you want to experiment on a zero budget, gather up some bones from the back yard if you have a dog and slice some blanks with a band saw if you have access to one. There are several articles in a google search about this. The sunbleached cow bones are supposed to be very attractive once you slice, size, and polish them. If you cut them to a close height, you only need to slot them 1/2 the thickness of the string.
Whitmore Willy Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I told you I would let you know. So.... Got both trem and tusq nuts today. Put the tusq on my standard. Heck of an improvement over plastic. The trem nut was the wrong size. (not happy) Called GPD, they have no problem with making it right. So I didn't get a chance to install and try it out. I did get a chance to examine it and I don't think you could go wrong with either one. Personally, I still like bone the best.
