ernest9yung Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Hi guys. This is my first post, I hope you all can give me some suggestions. Basically I play rock and jazz the most, and I just can't decide which guitar I should get, semi hollowbody or solid body. Any model suggested? Is Gibson much better than epiphone? My budget is kind of tight, it's around a $1000. Thanks for your time!
Just Strum Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I would recommend a semi-HB. Personally I think it is a more versatile guitar than many others you could look at. You could go budget with a Dot and spend the remainder of the money on a good amp. Or you can go with a more expensive semi-HB. I know the Dot, so that is one I can recommend. If anyone else would suggest a semi-HB, I will let them suggest a model. Be forewarned, you will be more confused on what to buy after this thread runs its course, than when you were when you posted it. Oh, and welcome to the forum.
JefferySmith Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I agree with Strum except I would recommend an Epiphone Sheraton or an Epiphone Lucille (for his reasons) and an amp. If you do want to get a guitar for $1,000, it's in that crevice between the MIK and MIC guitars and the MIJ guitars. The only Elitists left in that price range are the Les Pauls (recommended above). Don't buy one until you've felt one...it is a bit heavy. So you might want to consider a Les Paul Ultra (chambered). Look how nice I'm being...I didn't mention the myriad guitars of other manufacturers with a price tag of about $1,000!
cymbaline87 Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I guess a semi hollow body will give you a nice sound for both rock and jazz (and blues too).....its a quite versatile kind of guitar....it sounds different on the hands of different players... You could try looking for an Elitist Sheraton....I've seen them go for 1200 us dollars...and they are really great guitars. For a tighter budget....an early korean Sheraton....I have one (the one on my avatar)....and I love it....they usually sell for 600us.... Also check Rivieras from the same periods....they sound just as good. An Eliist Les Paul (like TheX recommended) is great....but maybe (and this is just my opinion) not ideal for jazz.... I wish you good luck....remember to try a bunch of them....and choose the one that fits you. Theres tons of awesome guitars in that price range.

Mine is from there, and it is a gem.
JefferySmith Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Woo Hoo! That B-stock Sheraton in ebony is still available here. Don't be scared off by the B-stock stigma. It is usually such a minor defect, it will take you 5 minutes to find it. Use the money you save for a hard-shell case.

charlie brown Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 ANY decent electric guitar can play ANY kind of music! What do YOU prefer? That's the question. If you like solid bodies, the LP's and SG's (Sticking with Gibson and Epiphone...since this IS their forum) are both great choices. I (personally) like Semi's, for Jazz...and some Blues, too. But, that's not to say you can't do both, with a LP or SG. You can! Les Paul, himself, did it, for decades! Sheraton's are awesome guitars, as well as Rivieras and Dots. The "Elitist" as has been mentioned, are the best of those, but even the Korean and Chinese versions are quite decent...and getting better, all the time, seemingly. So, if I was you...I'd go play as many of all the ones mentioned, and see what really appeals to You! Most of US...have one (or more) of all...We can't even make up OUR minds...much less yours. LOL! (Just kidding) Good hunting! CB
layboomo Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I'd buy a used guitar from a well known dealer like this one http://www.chrisguitars.com/guild99blues90-red.jpg or this one http://www.chrisguitars.com/guild97starfire4-bk.jpg It will absolutely Kill anything you can get new for a grand IMHO!
GlennW Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I'd suggest two Gibson '57 Classic pickups, subtract that from your budget, and find a 335 style guitar to put them in.
Whitmore Willy Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Ernest, Welcome to the forum. You must have asked the right question. You're getting some very good advice.
iansmitchell Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Epiphone dot studio musiciansfriend.com , GFS vintage 59 pickups and 4 push/pull pots for jimmy page mod(google it) store.guitarfetish.com, vox AC15 musiciansfriend.com There's your rig. Have fun.
ernest9yung Posted September 28, 2008 Author Posted September 28, 2008 You guys are AWESOME!!!!! All advises are very helpful!!! I will try to play all the guitars mention above and make a comparison. I will let you all know which one I buy later!! BTW, how Gibson and Epiphone difference? They are both very good guitar for me!
cymbaline87 Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Theres no point comparing Epiphone and Gibson really....for example....I'd rather having 2 or 3 Elitist models than only one Gibson because....even though Gibson is better...it aint THAT better.... As far as std models refers.....I guess I also prefer to have several of them modded to my personal taste than only one Gibson...because I like to have great guitars to play....and its always nice to have a wide range to choose from. If you care about having that big G word on your headstock....Gibson is the way to go...
Bender 4 Life Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Hey Ernest9, welcome to the forum, and let me tell you that you can trust what these guys tell you. Some of them recently helped guide me to a wonderful Epi. Sheraton II, that has a beautiful "clean jazzy" tone, and when played through the right amp model, gives off a verrrry nasty blues tone. In your price range i'd sure "test drive" these. 1 SheratonII 2 Lucille 3 Casino 4 Dot, or Dot Deluxe

They are both very good guitar for me![/quote']The main difference between the Elitist line and Gibson is that Gibson uses nitrocellulose lacquer.
