Stevie Nazarenie Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 ok simple. i've just put a bone nut on my guitar but i am going to give slide playing a go for about a week. and then what am i meant to use to file the slots. i can't afford the £50 nut files. i am using 9-42 strings.
AS90 Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Cant you just add all your questions to one thread? Its very annoying when one person takes up all of page 1.
Stevie Nazarenie Posted October 1, 2008 Author Posted October 1, 2008 no sorry i can't don't let it bother you!
SkEpTiKaL Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Erm, seems like you got it all figured out to me. You pretty much use the files you talked about. If you can't afford the expense of the files, then either ask someone to use theirs (if you know someone with them), or have your tech do it.
Stevie Nazarenie Posted October 1, 2008 Author Posted October 1, 2008 i don't know what tricks are out there. it's my first time at it. i just found a tip on a dremelized set of feeler guages but i don't have a dremel...
lostindesert Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Use heavier strings and raise the bridge for about a week. =D>/ Peter

Ya know those little fingernail files that nearly every woman in the western world carries in their purses? Get one of them for a buck (or if you're in Blighty' date=' less than a Euro). Most of those files have teeth on the edges. If not, get a ladies' emery board and use that. Or, get some 400 grit wet/dry emery cloth, fold it and do the job with that. Heck, even a good quality, fine grit sandpaper, folded will do the job. It ain't rocket science my frien[/color']d.

Oops, nearly forgot the most obvious and easiest method of all; Use a piece of no-good wound string as an abrasive. Just "pull/push" it across the nut. Works every time - perfectly!
AS90 Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 no sorry i can't don't let it bother you! You must be 12.
Stevie Nazarenie Posted October 1, 2008 Author Posted October 1, 2008 oh dear. no i'm 36 and been playing 25 years. nothing too see here...
Stevie Nazarenie Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 job done. i got by with tools no luthier wood go near but i've left provision for some real nut filling in the future. i used a hacksaw (lol) on the light strings and some needle files on the bass strings. the action is still high but playable. with no binding. if i get some money later this year i will get a full set. although the common approach seems to be buying a 13 guage for the first and second string. although someone used a 16 on the first 3 strings and the rest of the set.
msuspartansfan Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I'm looking forward to the post on pie filling...apple is nice
Stevie Nazarenie Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 hehe! my original spelling was with one "l" kinda looked funny without the "e" in file. i don't think i've ever used that word before in my life! and it's been along time since school. be prepared for more funny spelling errors. =P~/ i would go for cherry over apple as i have 3 cherry sunburst guitars. after a few drinks i have often wondered what they taste like. hic!
