AVAfan50 Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 I am looking for a distortion type pedal that plays good punk-pop music, like with a good crunch. I use an Ibanez G10 but I am wanting to use the pedal for an ES333 Tom Delonge I might buy. What brand/type would be best for this? As of now im looking at the "BOSS DS-1" "Ibanez DS7 Distortion" and "Ibanez TS7 Tubescreamer" Thanks.

He swears by it.
ButchCassidy Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 I have a TS9DX Turbo tube screamer and love it. I play a lot of Black Keys sounding stuff. I don't know if I'd use it for punk-pop stuff though. Give me a band you like the sound of to give me an idea of the sound you're looking for.

However the Tone locks pedals from Ibanez are really great IMO. I can't remember what the DS7 sounded like, sold it years ago, but the TS7 does a great TS9 Tubscreamer sound...I have two along with an old TS9. The DS1 has a very harsh and ice picky distortion sound...so so with out no gain. One you should also give a try IMO is the Bad Monkey. They run for about the same as them other pedals you have on your list price wise, but has a much wider range of tones than the others I think. They can be had cheap used..I picked mine up for 29 bucks and a friend got his 4 weeks ago our local GC for 20 bucks....nothing beats them at that price IMO. At any rate worth checking out.

ButchCassidy Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 I'd say if you're looking to sound something like the Strokes to not use anything like distortion. I'd go with the TS7, if you want something a little meaner sounding than TS9. I think distortion is too much though, unless you wanna do some Misfits sounding type of stuff.
SlagJones Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Is the Tom Delonge model a great choice? Couldn't the same money buy a Dot that would be more versatile? Two pickups and separate volume an tone controls vs one pickup, no tone control and one volume control and you would still have about a hundred dollars to buy a pedal? I haven't heard the TD so I don't know what the Dirty Fingers pickup adds to the equation. If the DF pickup is that important you could use just swap the bridge pickup in the Dot since you would have $100 leftover.

SlagJones Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 The Tom Delonge seems like the most unversatile guitar ever made. 1 volume control, that's it. Not worth $499 IMO. Even the LP Junior gives you a volume AND tone control.
ButchCassidy Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 That Tom Delong model has to be the ugliest semi-hollow I've ever seen and the best tones on a semi hollow come from the neck pickup IMHO..... [/quote'] Agreed. I guess it's for people like Tom Delong who never really shot for tone anyways.
rafaelh Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 That Tom Delong model has to be the ugliest semi-hollow I've ever seen and the best tones on a semi hollow come from the neck pickup IMHO..... [/quote'] Ditto on both counts...or IMO also. Plus 500 bucks for it!?!
tele63 Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Digitech Bad Monkey. It has separate low and high controls in addition to your level and gain. Plus, the price is right. I swear by mine. Still though, go to your local music store and find out what you like best.
ButchCassidy Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Yeah, I played messed around with one at music go round for a while. From what I remembered it sounded pretty good for being only $15... I don't recall it that well, there for it must not of been anything too impressive, but for $15 who cares! There's a band in Arizona that swears by their pastrami pedal, which I believe is similar?
SlagJones Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 I am actually talking about the yellow one that has a metal case that retails for about $59. Not the mini pedals that go for $15. Thanks tho.
rafaelh Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Man I think the Danelectro stuff are so cool looking.....never seen a Daddy O overdrive pedal to try though. Years ago I did play through a friends DD-1 Fab Tone Distortion pedal and I remember at the time liking it allot....never seen another one after that. About a month ago I saw one again and demoed it, it just sounded horrible....real harsh and digital sounding. It was used so it might have had something wrong with it. I know Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo with Los Lobos both use and like the Dan Echo. Anyhow sorry......not much help I know, but just could not stand not commenting on the Danelectro stuff. Just love the way their stuff looks.

Thanks tho. Yeah, true that... I'm getting it all mixed up with the pastrami and those other plastic ones. For cheap though, not too bad.
Memphs1978 Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 i have a TS9 and a Hothead from i like em both
Robo Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 I've gotten the new Danelectro CoolCats and I think they are great for the money. I've got the old Pastrami and Fabs in the plastic cases which are allright, and I also have a Bad Monkey, I've had some Ibanez too, but my favorite is the new CoolCat Drive. I really think this pedal at $24.00USD is worth checking out. The CoolCat Metal is good for a more modern Metal tone. The Transparent Overdrive is good too, a little less gain and less meaty than the Drive. They don't have the mid hump of the TSs so they may not appeal to the Tubescreamer crowd though.
Riffster Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 I would recommend the Coffin Blood Drive Pedal, great overdrive, true bypass and the price is not bad either. It has received great reviews from several guitar magazines. I am sure it would sound really good with the output of a dirty fingers. All of my guitars sound good with it.
lostindesert Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Fulltone Full-Drive 2 Mosfet overdrive/boost pedal with REAL true bypass switches. Peter
scott58 Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 This probably wouldn't suit the TS, but have you guys heard this thing? Pretty awesome.
BobSkippy Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 That Tom Delong model has to be the ugliest semi-hollow I've ever seen and the best tones on a semi hollow come from the neck pickup IMHO..... layboomo, I'm still trying to wrap my brain around how Tom DeLonge got signature models from *both* Fender/Squier *and* Gibson/Epiphone... And yes, it's the ugliest semi-hollow *I've* ever seen, too (with the *possible* exception of the Gibson ES-325 in the early 70's, during the Dreaded Norlin Era...)! ;-) -Bob
