marv Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Hi all, i have finally bought a epiphone les paul standard vintage sunburst. I have a Marshall mg 50dfx amp, but i cannot get the right warm sound. Can anyone recommend me a good amp? its only for home use and recording with. I use the built in distortion in the amp, but it doesn't sound as good as the valve ones, to be honest it sounds pretty weak. I'm after a papa roach distortion guitar tone. Should i get another marshall with built in distortion or get an amp+distortion pedal? Hope someone can point me in the right direction, thanks in advance
Ricochet Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 i cannot get the right warm sound.<--->I'm after a papa roach distortion guitar tone Somehow I don't think of Papa Roach as having a warm guitar sound...Anyhoo...I'd be thinking new speaker first...but that's just me...
wiggy Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 You could also look at one of the guitar fx units (e.g. Digitech GNX series, Line6 or Korg) Lots of amp models and stomp box simulations plus the ability to mix amp and speaker types to create a specific sound. Can record straight off them too.
marv Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 i did have a zoom g2 but was a bit overkill for what i wanted. i was thinking of getting a boss ds-2, as i like that grungy sound.
lostindesert Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I think you need a tube amp instead of a nasty and cold tranny. Peter

ButchCassidy Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Well hmm... The valve jr is good OF COURSE!!! haha. And as far as wanting a grungy almost distortion papa roach type of sound, i'd say something like the digitech grunge stomp box (I believe it's purple). Used to have it, sounded like what you're looking for. Wasn't my thing, so I brought it to music-go-round who just happened to already have three of them.... So maybe you could fine one at a place like that for cheap?
lostindesert Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 can anyone recommend me a good tube amp? its only for home use and recording with. Fender Blues Junior or Fender Pro Junior, great little amps. Peter
rafaelh Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Fender Blues Junior or Fender Pro Junior' date=' great little amps.[/quote']Words from the wise. Don't know your budget, but might also want to wait and check one of these puppies out....suppose to be coming out this month. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Egnater-Rebel-20-20W-Tube-Guitar-Amp-Head?sku=483496 Butch picked a good pedal to suggest IMO. Don't know what the new ones sound like but I have an old Digitech grunge pedal, 69..or something like that, that it is one great sounding grunge pedal......lots of fun to play through. ...but also like Butch....not my thing, so don't use it. However I kept mine....some where in my pedal cemetery.
