P-90's > P-94's ?

Has anyone played around with the P-94's yet? Possibly on the Nick Valensi Riviera? I was wondering 1- What are the differences, and 2- Which do you like better? I tried to find a Nick Valensi to play at the local stores but no one had any. I heard some people write in forums that they like the P-90 better. Also, what other types of p-90 style pup's would you recommend? I ask this because I'm considering changing the humbuckers out of my Dot (not sure if I will). I really love the way my Sheraton sounds, would changing my dot to single coil's give me a sound I might like or just something totally foreign? (sorry if this is a noobish question)

P-90's are single coil, and have a decided "Mid range Quack" to their tone. Great, by the way!

However, being single coil pickups, they have a bit of (60-cycle hum) noise, that humbuckers don't have.

(Hence the name "Humbucker"). But, tone wise, P-90's are hard to beat! P-94's, as I understand it,

are similar in tone to P-90's, but a bit "hotter!" Some like that, other's prefer the "real thing," i.e. lower

output. As to changing to P-90's for your Dot...if you like the tone of your Sheraton, THAT won't get you

it's tone. The Sheri has humbuckers, so it's a different tone/feel. Try playing a "Casino" as they have

P-90's. No center block, but it will give you an idea what P-90 tone, is! Valensi Riviera's are RARE in shops!

I've never seen ONE! Doesn't mean they don't stock them, once in awhile, but it's rare! If you like P-90 tone,

with a bit more/higher output, then P-94's would be a good choice, since they ARE configurated to drop right

into the standard humbucker holes...no routing, or extra holes need be drilled. GFS offers several alternatives,

too. Others here, "swear by them," but I have no personal experience, with any of them...yet!

Hope that's of some use...

If your Dot and Sherry have stock pickups, it's safe to assume that they sound almost identical. P90s will give you something different, though not as different as, say F*nd*r single coils. I have GFS Mean 90s in my Dot Studio and simply love them.

Yeah, thanks a lot! I'm shooting for the Black Keys type of sound, if you know who they are. I think I might look at getting some P-94's... unless someone can convince me that the GFS's are better. I just want another guitar with a different type of sound for some variation.

My dot and sheraton sound pretty different. I'm not exactly sure if it's just the pup's though... I'd imagine that it could be a number of things. Not that the Dot sounds bad, it's just that the Sheraton sounds a lot better. I was seriously considering the P-94's but after seeing the price of the mean 90's I think i'm going to do the GFS's. Would you say that mean 90's and P-90's sound different? And how do the mean 90's handle hum? Thanks for the feedback!

I suppose the only "true" P90 would be Gibson or Epiphone and they would be of the "soapbar" or "dogear" type. The "P90 in a humbucker size" is offered by many aftermarket manufacturers including GFS (Mean 90/Dream 90), Seymour Duncan (Phat Cat), Gibson (P94) and Kent Armstrong, to name a few. Obviously, there are going to be opinions about each one. And each one may sound different in each individual guitar. So, like the rest of us, take your best shot. With GFS, at least you're not risking a whole lot of money, and you can exchange them for another model if you don't like them. Hum isn't a problem for most of us; however, some just can't tolerate it and high-gain usually makes it worse (although P90s aren't really good for that, anyway). YMMV.

Yeah, the price is definitely right with the Mean 90's. The only thing that worries me is I've read that a lot of people think they're quiet. Is this true? And if so, are they too quiet? -Thanks

get a compressor or seymour duncan pickup booster and it'll add all the sustain you need then turn down the gain thats how i have it with only a little noise it'll sound great.the resonance switch on the pickup booster will turn single coils to humbucker or hot humbucker sound. best of both worlds. it's a quiet booster over a compressor too but more expensive.

What do you mean by "quiet"?
