freakinawesome Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Alright dudes, been going through alll the threads over the past couple weeks loads of good stuff here but I have a ? I can't find an answer to,maybe you can help..... just got a valve junior head/cab.The one I have is wired for 230v,how much does it matter that i'm gonna be pluggin into 240v?I have a few elec. items that are 230v and work good but am I in a different cattle of fish now? Cheers
Steven Lister Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 just got a valve junior head/cab.The one I have is wired for 230v 230v - Are you sure? Is it a mod item or something Epi produces just for European sales? In any event' date=' commercially sold electrical products will function okay within the range of current specs for which they are designed e.g. 110/120 or 220/240. This is due to the expected, normal fluxuations at the source (yes, it can vary all day, every day). However, on a valve amp excess voltage over a prolonged period can shorten the life of your valves (just as it can burn out your light bulbs faster than necessary). You can use voltage limiters if that is a problem. Welcome to the forum freakinawesome! Hit every BLUE NOTE baaaby..., I'm going to play on:-"

If so the UK mains changed a while ago to 230Volts to bring it in line with the rest of Europe. However, I have a Harley Benton GA5 which is the same as the Valve Junior (version 2) and it is easy to change the transformer to 240Volt operation if you need/want to by swapping one of the coloured cables. The unused ones are probably on some blank spade terminals on the PCB. I can't actually remember which one it is but it will be on the forum somewhere. If not, the old Valvejunior.com forums are still online at http://vj.minuteboard.com/m/b/go.html and I'm certain it is in there somewhere. Have a read through there anyway, there's a ton of interesting stuff, shame no-one uses it any more. I think (note THINK, not 100% certain) that converting it to the 240v setting lowers some of the voltages in the circuit anyway (as you will be running it on a low power) and is beneficial to the valves. I'm sure someone will jump in and either correct me on that or explain why or what! Why not test your voltage at the mains socket, that way you can be certain. For what it's worth mine also came set for 230v. I did change mine to the 240v setting and it has been fine for over a year now. Cheers, Ian.
GrumpyOldMan Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 230v - Are you sure? Is it a mod item or something Epi produces just for European sales? I imagine they all come with a multi tapped transformer and the cables applied for whichever country they are to be sold in. Very easy to change. Mine has taps for 110, 230 and 240v maybe 120 too, I can't remember. Ian.
freakinawesome Posted October 6, 2008 Author Posted October 6, 2008 Blimey that was quick, thanks for the replies! Well i'm in Ireland and I bought it from Germany(it actually came with the two prong plug for europe but I have other leads that will fit). So powering the amp by slightly less than 240v won't damage it,and if anything might make the tubes last longer?I got the bitmo trio so will be opening it up anyway but wanted to get this one right:)
cGil Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Just be really careful getting the quick connect off that power switch. The switch will fall apart if you pull on 'em, so gently pry the spring clips open a little so the connector just slides off really easy. Be sure to insulate it really well (slip boots don't count), coil it up and tie down in the corner. Do this to the other spare voltage taps, as well, They're just a nasty source of hum sitting there on the T10, T11, and T12 deadhead parking lugs (no traces to 'em). Crimp the new connector gently after you attach it to the switch. By the way, the color codes should be listed on a label on the PT. Gil...
mrjones200x Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Just checked my mains after reading high volatage blows your light bulbs......... Well we go through light bulbs at a rate of knots!!! At least one a week out of 13 in our flat (including 8 spots). Our Voltage is 248Volts!!!!! Cant be good for the V3 sitting by my bed. Especially as i play it maxed out alot!
freakinawesome Posted October 6, 2008 Author Posted October 6, 2008 Well just read worldwide voltages and us in Ireland have switched to 230(same as europe including Germany...where I bought it from) so I thought it was good to go....and it was:d/ Just finished having a play as we are deep in the country with no neighbours for 100 yards, this thing is way louded than I expected.Way louder,it was actually hurting the old ears so I had to play from another room just to get some break-up!!Then plugged the tonelab in,sounds great to my ears already so if the mods make it even a bit sweeter fandabydosy!! Cheers for the replies peeps=d>
