marcbc Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 Hello, I need some advice. I have a addiction to guitars semi hollow body guitars. I have a gibson les paul studio and was wondering if a gibson es 333 would be a better choice. Is it worth trading for?
TWANG Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 Better is relative. shades of gray. all that jazz. But you seem to want that semi hollow sound.. list or street price here is less important than the actual guitar. How's your lp studio? Are you talking about a specific 333? You should be able to balance it and the lp feature for feature, tone for tone, and come up with a checklist of things you gotta have.. wanna have.. wouldn't mind having.. and can do without. A ding here, but a little better fretwork there.. that kind of thing is only what you know. I have a sheri and an lp studio.. both epis, of course, and I have to say I sure would have a headache trying to choose one over the other. but Blondy would win. 15 years is a long time to own a guitar. And I know I'd miss the semi sound more than the solid sound. and anyway, addiction is good when it comes to guitars. TWANG
ButchCassidy Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 Twang, kinda off subject, but is your blondy a 1993?
tulsaslim Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 In addition to being a semi, the 333 has a much thinner neck than your studio. To me, that's a great thing but only you can decide whether you prefer a thin or fat neck. I'd do the deal in a heartbeat if both guitars were in equal condition.

[/quote'] On the open used market an ES333 is worth more (in general) than an LP studio... So monetarily its a good trade... If you like semi hollows an ES-333 is a good starting guitar.... It doesn't have as much fancy visual attributes like an ES-335... But who cares... They play and sound great.... An ES-333 has the 490R/498T pickups... The same as the les paul custom and ES-137. These are outstanding pickups. To me the 490R sounds exactly like the 57 classic and the 498T is hotter than the 57 Classic Plus... An ES-335 and ES-335 should conceivably have the same wood... But I don't know for sure... They use the same species.....
