I just don't get it???

This is on a 2 month old G-400. It has 2 vol,2 tone and a 3 way switch.

When 3 way is in middle and treble vol. is at 0 there is no output no matter where I put rhythm vol. If I roll treble vol.up to 3 or so then I have control over rhythm vol.

Same thing with rhythm vol at 0 then no control on treble until I roll rhythm up a little.

Is this normal? Would someone else with a 3 way try the same and see what they hear?

I mean, a switch is a switch. How does it know what the pots are doing on the opposite sides?

I know this is not a big deal but it just kind of bothers me.

thanks

That's the way they are wired, been doing it like that for years. Spud has a nice diagram for wiring both volume contols so they individually turn off each pickup when in the center position, but he was banned. He posted those pics several times, but since the new forum was set up, they don't keep all of the posts. After page 10 they are deleted, so there is a good chance they aren't here anymore.

I personally like it this way, that way I can shut off the volume of the guitar in the center position with one control and not two.

yep. they're made that way.

how high you have to turn it up to get a signal varies with pot quality, I've found.

You can wire them run individually. I can get you an url if you want to bother.

both wiring methods allow some influence of one pup over the other..

with individual controls, you get a bit of bleed through of signal when both are off.

but they both work pretty well.. most of the time you just aren't at the bottom of the range, and with one just barely on, you really aren't affecting the other enough for it to be problematic.

Figure out what volume mix you like best with both pickups active - so long as one of the volumes is dimed, adjust the other one to get the mix you like. Once you know that, you can use the dimed volume as a master volume whenever both pickups as selected. And you always know what numbers to go back to if you need to make an adjustment to use only one pickup for a solo, then go back to rhythm with both pickups and the original tone. Gives you the option of having either pickup dominant while retaining master control, without needing an extra master volume pot.
