Grandpa Larry Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Hi guys. I just ran into an excellent deal on a used Epi LP Custom. I've only had the chance to play it a couple of hours, but it looks like I'm already in love. It's plugged into my Behringer V-Tone GMX210. I think it's an absolutely killer blues axe! With the PUPs that are in it, which I assume are stock, it's got that thick, creamy sound with loads of sustain. Anyway, I won't go into detail describing it, since those of you who own one know all that. I do need to know a couple of things. First, how do I determine it's age? Is there a way to tell when it was made via it's serial number or features? Also, the finish on my axe is beautiful. It looks extremely well cared for. The gold plated hardware, however, isn't doing so well. The finish on the tailpiece, especially, is quite tarnished and pitted. Is this normal for these axes? One other thing. I'm interested in recomendations for strings. Also, I'd love to hear what types of aftermarket pickups and other upgrades you guys have used. Any other info on this axe will be greatly appreciated.
starman Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 As for age, the serial number can tell you that. The serial number tells the following: I05091240 I = The factory it was made in (Different letters for different factories.) 05 = The year it was made 09 = The month it was made 1240 = The production number for that month.
lostindesert Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Need the serial for dating. The tarnishing of the goldplating is normal. Strings i'd recommend are D'Addario EXL110 Regular Light Gauge .010s. Pickups: Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, Gibson, GFS, Lindy Fralin, Kent Armstrong, Bare Knuckles etc. Peter
charlie brown Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 www.guitardaterproject.org Type in the information you know (serial number, country of origin..if you know it), etc. They should be able to tell you when, which factory, and date. CB
Grandpa Larry Posted October 13, 2008 Author Posted October 13, 2008 Well, it was made in November of 1997. Which factory does "U" stand for?
