charlie brown Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 It is a true hollowbody. Well, THAT's really interesting! MINE has a center block! There's no doubt about it! In fact, just to be extra sure, or to see if I was hallucinating, yesterday, from joy/excitement I rechecked it. It's quite apparent, and I can actually see/feel it. Plus, the weight is is like my other Riviera (with mini's) only a bit heavier, because of 3 pick-ups, and the Bigsby! So, Slim...if your's is (really) hollow...they must be making 2 versions??? CB
tulsaslim Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 I guess I'll have to break out a mirror. I looked inside it (as I do with all my semis) and didn't see anything whereas I can easily see the center block in my 3 dots, 2 elitist dots, and Gibson 333. I cannot see it in the P-93 but I will look again. However it does make sense if it does have one in that it is a Riviera instead of a Casino. I will look again.
charlie brown Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 Just "Cranked" this thing through my Marshall AVT-20 (it's pretty loud, despite it's size and wattage)...and I'm very pleased, so far, with the tones I'm getting. Warm, bluesy, glassy, to mellow and Jazz like. The mellower tones, are very articulate, and not "muddy," at all...unless you want it that way...but, even so, I can't get (so far) the kind of "mud" that the neck humbuckers do. For me, this is NOT a "bad thing!" LOL! It's definitely a major "Keeper!" And, with 3 P-90's, amazingly quiet, hum/hiss wise, too. I haven't really messed around with the Bigsby much. I like the look of it, but have never been one to use a vibrato arm, much. I think if I was going to do that, a lot, I would get a roller bridge, and differnt nut, to accomodate it. As it is, it's just fine, for what I'll be doing, mostly. Like "Slim," I'll (most likely) do some adjusting, here and there, for personal preferences. But, mine was pretty decent, right out of the box, I must say. CB
wardog Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 ordered it, yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
charlie brown Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 LOL!....get this man a valium! (I know the feeling!) CB
snowbum007 Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 And, with 3 P-90's, amazingly quiet, hum/hiss wise, too. In looking at one of the close-up photos there are three volumes and one tone. With a three way, if the bridge and neck are wired to the switch with the middle (reverse wound) always on and controled by a volume, would that not explain why it is amazingly quiet? I just noticed the photo on MF and saw three volumes and am starting to wonder how it is wired. Anyone know yet?
tulsaslim Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 I'm sure most of you experienced players will agree that 'the guitar dictates what you play on it'. For instance, when I got the P-93 last evening, once I tuned it up I played 'The Thrill Is Gone' (no backward irony intended) for about 30 minutes. I hardly ever play that song anymore but it just 'seemed right' for the P-93. This is definitely a major blues machine. (BTW, those P-90s sounded killer on that tune). Uneducated players give me strange looks when I tell them 'the guitar tells me what to play' but I know most of you guys know exactly what I'm talking about.
pohatu771 Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 You're not helping me at all... If these are still available at the beginning of the year, I'll probably end up picking one up... even though I shouldn't... And if I did buy a guitar, it should have humbuckers... I still don't own any.
tulsaslim Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 I went over to Harmony Central and this guitar generated five pages in five days, it might get beat with this thread. I went to Harmony Central & looked through the ENTIRE list of Epiphone electric guitar reviews and could not find this one. I also searched '50 most recent reviews' & came up empty. I typed 'Epiphone Riviera P-93' in the 'search' window & they said they had nothing. Just exactly where in the hell did you find the stuff on this guitar at Harmony Central?
charlie brown Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 It's on the acapella harmony-central forum...I've tried (3 times) to get the link on here, to no avail. Sorry.... Someone with more computer "savy" will, no doubt, be able to do that, for you. CB
L1Picker Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Just exactly where in the hell did you find the stuff on this guitar at Harmony Central? Here ya go... Riviera Talk on HC
L1Picker Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Mine isn't here yet, but it is in state now. UPS puts it in Jacksonville with an on time delivery of tomorrow. Yeah, baby!
twiggy Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?p=30679848 p.s. sorry, speed of time :)
cookieman15061 Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Hey CB that is one great looking guitar! I've been in the market for a telecaster but after checking out your pics I gotta say another guitar with bigsby may be in my future. Hmmmmm wonder if the wife likes gold on dark red.:)
charlie brown Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 Thanks, Cookieman....I'm lovin' it, so far! The only Amusing thing was the plastic that covered the pickguard, was a "bear" to get off! Must have been on there, a LONG time, 'cause it came off in tiny little pieces...and left a lot of residue on the plastic. Got out some WD-40 (AKA "Panther Piss," in this part of the country), and it cleaned it right up, with no residual "side effects," at all. So, all's good to go. Did a minor adjustment to the bridge (lowered it a bit), and because of that, I had to adjust (downward) the pole screws on the bridge and neck pickups...about 2 full turns on the neck and 3 full turns on the bridge. I actuall raised the pole screws on the middle pickup, and they all seem better balanced, now...to each other. Plus, the strings don't hit them with the lowered bridge. Man!...those pickups have a Lovely "Growl," when pushed! Rounder, than a humbucker! The more I play this guitar, and do a little (personal) tweaking, the better I like it...if that's possible? LOL! It will be fun/interesting, to see what some of the others here, have to say...and what they end up doing, with theirs. CB
JefferySmith Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Mine isn't here yet' date=' but it is in state now. UPS puts it in Jacksonville with an on time delivery of tomorrow. Yeah, baby![/quote'] Damn! It has been almost 24 hours and it still hasn't shipped yet. I guess I won't get the lightning service that CB got. But I do recall that I got my SG from Japan in 3 days, and CB had to wait more like 2 weeks, and Ant had to wait more like 3 weeks. Mine turn now.
charlie brown Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 Well, Tulsaslim got his the same day I did...so maybe it is our central location thing? If they're shipping from the KC warehouse, it (kinda) makes sense....but, if it's coming from Oregon...who knows why we got them that fast! I was very surprised, to say the least. Jeff...Did you do a "phone order," or "on-line?" It was a phone order, wasn't it? Not sure if that makes any difference, in what gets shipped when, or not? By the way, Slim...what did you find out, about the "Center block" or lack thereof, on your guitar? CB
tulsaslim Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 CB, Yep, I saw the centerblock. (Started a new thread). I'm pretty sure they are shipped from their warehouse in Kansas City. Hence, that's why we got ours so quickly. As I said in the other thread this guitar has a completely different tone than any of my dots. Again, as I said in the other thread, it's incredibly fat & thick (a la 'The One I Love' by REM). I'm really digging it but am not done adjusting it yet. I plan on doing just what you did, i.e. lower the bridge & pickups as there is room for lower action. (Not that there's anything wrong with the action out of the box. I just like it as low as I can get it).
charlie brown Posted October 22, 2008 Author Posted October 22, 2008 How does the neck compare to your "Dot?" Mine is a bit fatter, than my other Riviera (with mini's)...but, not as fat and my Gibby "Lucille!" It's not a problem, at all...just a little "beefier!" Since I don't own a "Dot," and people here say they have "fat or chunky" necks...I'm just curious... Thanks, CB
Ricochet Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Tulsa...what made you think it was a hollow-body? Is it very light in weight? How much is yours CB? Man...participating in this thread depresses me to no end...
tulsaslim Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 CB, I was fooled by the MF description which said it's a 'hollowbody' (apparently nobody there knows the difference between a hollow & semi-hollow). The neck is a little thinner than the Dot but not as thin as a Sheraton. I like thin necks & this one, although not really 'thin', is very comfortable. All & all, I'm really glad I bought it. Love them P-90s.
charlie brown Posted October 22, 2008 Author Posted October 22, 2008 Yeah, those P-90's are great! Nice articulate cleans, with a lovely "round" tone...and when you push them, or use a bit of over-drive, they have a lovely "Growl!" I'm with you, Slim....REALLY GLAD I pulled the trigger on this one! And, yeah...I think your description of the neck is much like mine. As to the weight, Ricochet...it's a good weight, but certainly not "light," like the Casino. Feels very much like a 335 or the standard Riviera (w/mini's)...but with the added weight of the third pickup and Bigsby. But, it's not uncomfortably "heavy," at all. Feels good, in a "quality" sort of way, you know? For me...this has been the best $535 (with case) guitar purchase, I've made...to date, anyway. CB
wardog Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Jeff, i did an online order and it has been 24 hrs. called mf to get status and was told it was in system to prep for delivery. should be set to deliver tomorrow. i guess, i should have picked a faster shipping option. I went with the free 2-5 day. But, with the great feedback on the threads, i am happy i got it. i can wait for the hngd!!!! I plan to use the gc in store coupon to get a case and strap, strap locks, etc.
