Pick Shield?

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a new Epi PR5E acoustic (in black) and so far my only complaint is the lack of any pick protection of any kind.

Years ago (back in the 60's) when I got my Gibson 12 string I bought some plastic material with an adhesive backing.

I cut this out and attached it to the guitar top face and it has worked great to prevent pick scratches.

When I bought this Epi, I asked the guy at the guitar store if he had any of this plastic material. After giving me a blank stare and looking at a few stand off shields he said he had never heard of such a thing.

Do any of you know of a source of supply for such a thing? I really hate the idea of my pick scratching up my guitar and my finger picking leaves a great deal to be desired.

Thanks

Jim

You could try Stew Mac.com, I have a PR-6TR and honestly I' love the pick marks on it

it looks like its been played to death ( which it has ) and of course you will find those

who say that adding pickguards deminish the top vibration ( who knows for sure on

that one ) All I can tell you is that its just a ton of fun to play and record with and has

never let me down.Ship.................ps you'd be surprised as to how many actually

remove their pickguards off their guitars.

Yep, Ship, you know me and my attitude about pickguards! As I think about it, not a single one of my 15 guitars has a pickguard, not even the old Stella, and had any of them come with one I probably would have removed it (except the Masterbilt--it was SO difficult to get a new one, I could have bought used, but I wanted a new one for the factory warranty and so I would have left that one on so as not to void the factory warranty).

I've heard about "static cling" type clear plastic that can be mounted on a soundboard and removed with absolutely no adverse effects, there is no glue holding it on, just the naturally adhesive nature of the plastic....and the players I've spoken with all say it offers good protection.

Ask.com Flamenco Guitar Golpe.

Flamencoists quite often preferr to use the clingy plastic to make guards, or as they call them golpe adore(sp?) instead of the heavy plastic. Stew Mac might have it.

I checked out Stew Mac. Theirs is clear mylar with a really sticky adhesive.. see their installation instructions for warnings..

The kind I'm thinking of is naturally clingy, like static cling. It will peel off easy without adhesive. Search for flamenco guitar accessories. In the interim, in teh auto accessories dept of WalMerts, they have static cling film for puting a dark tint on auto glass. While not clear, it will protect your top. And.. you can cut to any shape you want.

Fantastic !

The Kling static type of protection looks just like what I want.

The plastic I used on my old Gibson had a self stick glue on it and after 45 years it has taken up permanent residence there. On the bright side it is the only area that doesn't have micro-checks in the finish. LOL

Thanks to all of you

One more recommended by a flamencoist friend of mine. This site sells the "Kling-On" brand as well as Rokkomann Guitar Guard. This one is more money but it appears you get two sheets of plastic instead of one.

Also a place he says is the best for classic / flamenco strings... maybe even steels.

Thanks TommyK.

I found a place in my town that sells the Kling-On protectors and bought one.

It was not very large but it was large enough so that with a bit of trimming it will cover up

the area which needs it the most.

The protector is 6 thousandths of an inch thick and adheres nicely to the front of the guitar.
