Mash94
hey fingers, what is the color of your tele?? and what are the specs (what year, make)
GKingN
I play mine with my strap up pretty high, like on my chest. I just think it looks cooler, like the Beatles I suppose. Its also a lot easier to play.
Riffster
Wearing my guitar too high screws up my elbow movement on both arms. I wonder why Jimmy Page is absent from the names of players that wear their guitar low. I always wondered how he played slide on the Danelectro wearing that thing so low. I think Jimmy influenced a lot of kids back then to wear their LPs real low. James Hetfield has always played low since he himself was a kid, I don't think he does it for the kids. NeoConMan
James Hetfield has always played low since he himself was a kid' date=' I don't think he does it for the kids.[/quote'] Sure he does! He thought it looked cool when HE was a kid, and thus.... :-) Yeah, to each their own. I get a kick out of the jazz bass players that have it up under their chin and their right hand and wrist at an impossible angle.
Vic
i can't solo as accurately if the guitar is too low. My i am just riffing it out i play low. the strings just below my belt line is perfect 4 me.
Cooperoni
I wear mine like this Its just more comfortable there. P.S. yes I know it isn't plugged in I was just rockin' out w/my new explorer and my friend snapped the pic. Probably playing "Finding My Way" by RUSH! schizophrenica
Well play an acoustic so you can have an excuse to play sitting down.. :) Seriously though it just takes some getting used too. And you will find its much easier to shred or just play anything on the higher frets by standing up. If you're just gonna play some rhythm then hanging low would be quite awkward(sp?) at first, especially for the barre chords. Find the best height for yourself. Slinging it real low isn't as cool as it seems anyway. And being a bassist well I tend to sling em quite high up. Have fun while you're at it. Cheers! Ian Martin
Wearing my guitar too high screws up my elbow movement on both arms. Jimmy Page has confessed in interviews that, for instance, playing live he couldn't play barre chords the "normal" way. He uses his thumb to fret the bass note. Obviously, a lot of players do that anyway but it makes it much easier when you're a low slinger.
Robster
I'm with Ian on this one. For intricate picking, leads and whotnot, it is undoubtably easier to be more accurate with the guitar higher up. But I just find it easier to play with the guitar below my belt. Play a lot of rock/punk type stuff, and the riffs just seem easier to hit with the guitar there. Don't think there is a really right or wrong way to do it, try lots of different positions and the one that feels right is the one you should use! rybass
On the live videos I have aof Zep Page sits to play slide on his Dano. And you can clearly see him using his thumb on chords. I have small hands and when I first started playing I modeled my stance after page and learned to use my thumb. I eventually moved on to the Morello school when I started doing more intricate noise mainly b/c the small hands and working high up on the fret board for the stranger noise. Now I'm inbetween on guitar, a little lower on my beltline. I don't lead mostly rythm and fills and mostly in the first five positions for beefy tone. On bass I sling low b/c it's easier on my plucking elbow and wrist. Plus the neck is so long it's easy to reach the low and high. I usually sit to work out intricate parts and slowly learn them standing up.
fingers galore
hey fingers' date=' what is the color of your tele?? and what are the specs (what year, make)[/quote'] Hey MASH. The tele is an `05 deluxe. The color is aged cherry burst. I bought it new after playing it only 10 minutes on a crappy little practice amp. I know that sounds crazy. It has become my main guitar. Btw, I just got a new `08 LP standard faded and it blazes. It may end up taking over first place. Cheers. :-)
NeoConMan
You have to play in the bathroom? :-) I saw the tile walls, assumed the curtain behind you was over the shower. Just kidding!
DuaLeaD
Playing standing isn't hard for me. I just get tired sooner. Try playing and WALKING or even RUNNING on stage....Now THAT'S hard... I'm not sure how Pete Townshend did all that crazy stuff. I still have my Who DVD where the original lineup plays "Won't Get Fooled Again" circa 1978. I love the famous part where Pete Townshend slides across the entire stage on his knees after striking a power chord while Roger Daltrey does probably the best whail ever.. Now THAT is rock 'n roll. retrosurfer1959
Well at least Ian doesn't have to worry about buckle rash on his guitar. I fall into the same general conversation years ago it was a big deal to sling it low and play with a swagger. Now its pretty well centered on the belt buckle unless I'm really working the neck then I'll bring it up a little higher. Im in a cast with my left hand right now (two more weeks) after another surgery for Carpal Tunnel (3rd) if I keep a having these frickin hand issues I'll need it under my chin to keep the wrist straighter
RichCI
I find it easier to play while standing up as I can move my arm better for strumming. I fall somewhere in between you low slingers and high slingers though; I like the guitar to hang a little lower than most for picking and strumming but not so low so that it's a hassle to fret. Riffster
To me it is really about the scale lenght, the Gibson scale of 24.75" helps me play a little lower (still normal range though). I saw a blues band at a picnic and the guitar player was playing a strat real low and he could play. He was tall and skinny. I saw him getting up there on the neck without any trouble. Eventhough I only play as a hobby the main thing for me is to hang my arms as much as possible, I had the disc between C6 and C7 replaced and have a metal plate with 4 screws on the back of my neck. The surgery came too late for the nerves that run through my left hand, some damage was already done, the doctor was impressed with my recovery though. ...stiffhand is not a just a screenname or a Clapton nickname spin off...
