Macquarrie Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Anyone have any suggestions on what to look for in a guitar cable. I am trying to learn with a few books and a video but I am at a complete loss when it comes to cables. I have my new Riviera P93 LE as well as a JL Casino but the only cable I have is a cheap Fender that seem to be crackling and popping. My amp is a Vox AD30VT and I'm not sure what the best choice for my guitar cable would be. Thanks for all of your help so far, the carnuba wax on the cut away area on the Riviera seems to have helped. Thanks, Mac
Ron G Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I have one of these. It's made well and very reasonably priced. An 18-foot one was only $10 and has a lifetime warranty. http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0990410009
stan 58 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Spend the money to get one with lifetime backing, and keep the slip somewhere safe. Stan.
Just Strum Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 1) Don't over pay for Monsters - hype 2) I use these and have been very pleased. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/1/4in15/ I have three - two 10' and a 20' I also have the Fender mentioned and have been just as pleased with that one also.
kevin134 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 For cables I like Conquest or the ones from Guitar-cable.com Both are made in the US and seem more well made then the cheaper ones.. Of course I may be biased since both are made near me
pohatu771 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Don't buy Monster on principle... their legal proceedings aren't exactly "friendly." But other than that, there's no reason to spend four times as much on a cable. http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/monster-cable-still-evil-will-allow-monster-mini-golf-to-exist/ I have a Whirlwind cable, and I'm quite pleased with it. It's a locally-owned company, but I've seen them advertised in Premier Guitar, so I know they sell nationally.

They are very well made and heavy duty. At least the one I have is.
taxman Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 You have a Casino and play through a VOX? Come on, what are you waiting for? Go vintage and buy one of these. Yes, they are pricey, but they are unbelievable quality, and they look cool as hel with the retro coil. Plus you can get them in some great colors (red?, blue?), and you know how a thirty foot cable is all over the place? Well, these are 30 feet but they coil up so it is like a four foot cable. Spend the extra bucks and buy one. I am going to be buying some more myself. I play my Casino through a black one and man it looks so cool and sounds even better. VOX Coil Cable:
snookelputz Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I've used all kinds. The only thing these days, I want it to have a molded plastic end. The metal ones always come unscrewed. Plus, fewer shorts in my experience. I REALLY prefer wireless.
brad1 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I like the Live Wire brand they sell at Guitar Center. You can get a 25 ft. cord for $17.99, and it has a lifetime warranty.

Charles Obscure Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 +1 on Guitar-cable dot com. You can have it assembled to your specifications, without paying a ton of money. Well worth it IMHO. BeatleNut, I love coiled cables! True, those Vox ones are pricey, but it's hard to find decent coiled cables. BTW, if you're having problems with your connectors unscrewing, a bit of heat-shrink tubing will fix that.
taxman Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 BeatleNut' date=' I love coiled cables! True, those Vox ones are pricey, but it's hard to find decent coiled cables.[/quote'] A fine cable will run you $25-$30. These VOX coil ones can be found on the net for as low as $35. That's not much of a difference. And the quality really is top notch. I accidentally put my amp on the cable - an amp that weighs a whopping 75 pounds - and I thought the cable would be toast. But the coil cable took a lickin' and kept on tickin'.
