Epi Ebony LP Jr new yesterday fr GC - quality questions

Marxbro,

Dude. You have been quite criticial of my posts. What's up dude?

You believe that a Gibson LP Jr is a toy? How could I be less suspicious of you? I'm not clueless as you impune. I'm not delusional. The guitar is nice. But the Gibson certainly was not a toy and was played by many great guitarists in earlier iterations. My concern is with this specific model.

Where is our brotherly kindness or helpful concern, which should be a cornerstone of our great forums. We have discussed this model guitar for a while now and your posts seem to clang with a strongly dissonant note. I certainly hope you do not pride yourself on being harsh. Or is something going on I'm not aware of?

Clueless, delusional, Gibson LP Jr is a toy? I would like a few clues and I received them. Some things I didn't understand were clarified. But suggesting that the Gibson LP Jr is a toy is not completely true. Yes, many children used the original guitar as their learning instrument, nice learning instrument I'd say. Many pro's have used it to magnificent esteem.

Furthermore, your degrading evaluation of the instrument being discussed appears to diverge quite sharply from the general comments.

I still ask, have you owned one or played a new style Epi LP Jr? Do you have hands on substantial experience or is this just conjecture based upon your intellectualizing and guesswork?

I'd like to know that answer.

Your posts have stirred the clearing water and fueled the debate, bringing us back to my original question:

What is the quality of the present model? Is it a toy, as you suggest, or is it more? Is it a guitar that can be played and enjoyed by players of all ages, and is it, in the hands of an artist, capable of producing sweet and growling tones, evoking deep emotion in the player and possibly those who may hear?

Or is it only to be relegated to the foolish and clueless delusionary unfortunate sons that can't afford screaming golden zonkers? Imagine Marxbro, for a moment, if you may, the young Robert Johnson or B. B. King, or Albert Collins, or Chuck Berry, or Johnnie B. Good; poor and maybe with only a few cents in their pockets, playing some old funky guitar, sitting by the bank of the railroad track strumming to the rythym that the engines made. Drinking out of different fountains, going to different theaters, riding in the back of the bus; and one day showing up at the studio to do an audition with, in some cases, those same pitiful guitars they learned to make sing a new song, a deep blue vibe, a rock-a-roller. Junk old discarded guitars that were given soul by players, super players, that came out of no where and rose to heights of success that they would absolutely never have imagined life would present before them.

These weren't toys. They were junk. And any one of them would have loved to have a Gibson LP Jr, even the new style one. Needlesstosay, later in life they acquired, often, the sweetest guitars they could find.

I would think that you might be amiss in your suspicions of cluelessness and delusions and the senselessness of my posts. I'm one little man in one big world, and I don't know all the answers; but I know that little black Epi LP Jr whispered something to me. And I'm still trying to figure it out dude.

It sure plays good and sounds sweet and chimey, and smooth as a freight train rumbling thru the night, miles away across the great plains, way off in the distance with the whistle blowing a type of lonely blues you'd have to understand to know. Maybe you do understand dude, maybe you don't.

Ahhhh . . . . All this discord and harmony in regard to the humble LP Jr.

I like this thread. One little guitar has brought out so much from us all here.

I appreciate all of the comments here. Even those, unbelievely, from Marxbro. Where you comin' from bro?

Peace

Duffy

He never said the Gibson version is a toy, he said the Epi version is. And in comparison, it is. He exaggerates slightly to make a point, but the point is valid. What you have is only "like" a Gibson Junior in external size and shape and basic properties. It is a budget-price authorised copy using much cheaper materials all round - wood, construction techniques, electrical components, fret wire, tuners....need I go on? The Gibson version is a great guitar, built to last and good enough for any pro player. The electricals and hardware in the Gibson are the same spec as they put in their $3000 guitars.

What you have is a good quality beginners instrument turned out at a budget price, designed to look roughly like a Gibson.

It's fine for what it is. I have similar stuff, an Epi LP Special 2 and an Alba Telecaster, both bought for less than $100. It's fun to have them lying around and play occasionally. If you enjoy playing it, that's all that matters. And the only person who can judge that is you. You decide.

Duffy[/quote']Any guitar that you can buy new for $99 is a toy, or VERY close to being one. To even begin the long discussion you have over a $99 guitar seems rather foolish.

Rumor says Charlie Parker recorded one or more LP's with a plastic toy saxophone, so why would a $99 gutiar be a bar to happiness? Duffy, make all the music you can, using any and every piece of gear (or toy) you can squeak, pick, pluck, blow, saw or beat it out of.

And, Marx??? Do you feel any better now? I submit that an established principal of life says insanity is performing the same action again and again, while expecting different results. Your recent posts just haven't seemed full of joy, happiness and a desire for life.

How can I help?

Funny...I've yet to see that happen.:D

When it comes right down to it, the Les Paul Junior is the cheapest guitar Epiphone sells. It's not known for it's high-quality parts or superb electronics. It's a cheap guitar.

There's a difference between a "high-quality" and a "good" guitar. The Junior isn't the highest-quality guitar, but it's still decent. When I was recording at my friend's studio, I couldn't get what I wanted with my Strats or Casino, so I picked up his Epiphone Les Paul Junior and it did the job.

If you like the guitar, keep it. As you said, you're not in it for the resale value. Even if you were, the $100 guitars are the best ones to lose money on... my high school math teacher told us about how 50% is 50%, but sometimes 50% is more.

If you're going to sell a used guitar for 50% of what you paid, you're better off losing 50% of $100 than 50% of $1000.

Actually Marxbro, although somewhat harsh, is right about that plastic sax. You'd think that someone would have quickly went out an got a real sax. That whole story could be interesting.

Evidently the dude was strung out way deep on drugs and alcohol and sold his instruments and when the time came to go to the studio he picked up a plastic one. I wonder how that sounded and how that LP stacks up to his other recordings. That would be interesting to know.

But Marxbro, you have not answered my question: Have you owned a new style Epi LP Jr or had substantial hands on time with one? My suspicion is that you are theorizing about your ideas concerning the Epi LP Jr without actually having played one. Why are you evasive to this question?

Theories and conjecture are fine, but I'm trying to get some real world feedback from people who have played them or own them.

I still fail to understand your die hard quest for opinions, as making any sense. You bought a VERY cheap guitar, you've played it, either toss it out or keep it, why in the world are you on a quest to get opinions on this thing? Was that your life savings? If it was then forgive me, I could understand your position a lot more.

Marxbro,

The treatment I have received at your hands is despicable. You are very rude and insulting and your comments are of little relevance. If this behavior is characteristic of you don't post any more comments to the thread I started because I'm insulted by your inuendo and sarcasm.

Maybe you treat other people this way and if you do someone should put an end to it.

I posted a good question. Your evaluation of the worth of my question has been disgusting. The fact that you carried on so foolishly is beyond astounding.

Don't you realize that you are offensive and very negative?

You need to rein yourself in or someone else needs to rein you in. I must say that I have been offended by your comments and assumptions concerning my character and judgement.

Do us all a favor and keep your opinions to yourself if you can't express them with dignity.

I am interested in opinions not insults. There is more that I would like to say to you but the rules prohibit it. Okay, you got under my skin. That was your game. And now you probably still won't leave me alone because you are a compulsive bully.

Even some of your forum mates have tried to clue you in on cooling your approach but you continued to grind away relentlessly. Maybe it makes you happy to treat people badly. I'm not happy about it. I even tried to humor you, to express that I thought some of your comments had merit, but still you continued with the antagonism. It's just not right.

We try to have a decent discussion and you have continued to express antagonistic posts. You must think you have some kind of special status and are untouchable on the forum so you can say whatever you want with as much indignity as you can conjure up.

It isn't right dude. Something is wrong. Let us have our discussion without your insults and foolish assumptions. If you don't like it keep it to yourself and read something more to your taste. But don't insult me any more.

You probably managed to get me kicked off the list because of your insistent haggling and insulting me. This probably makes you happy in a sorry type of way. You really think you are something.

That's the truth. Let the chips fall where they may.

Peace

Duffy

I heard the bullets were decent. Never played one.

Duffy

I had one, gave it away to some kid that wanted a Strat, but had no money.

I had a Deluxe that I liked, but only kept it for a week, but not enough to keep. I haven't been thrilled with any of the upper end Squiers and lower end Fenders. I think having a American Deluxe sets the bar high, so they just don't appeal to me.

Sort of like my Dot, I love the guitar, but if I had a Gibson ES335, I probably would find the faults in it. Still, it's a guitar I like and since it was free, any upgrades really don't take me over cost.

Yes.

The only Squier's worth their salt were a select run of the Japan ones.

You ever try the MIM squiers, fender in big letters "squier" in smaller?

Classic vibe squiers?

Vintage modified squiers?

Squier telecaster custom II(best $120 import guitar ever made)?

Was it a new basswood bullet or old plywood bullet?

I'm lucky enough to have one of those Jap Squiers, bought it new in the 1980s. I understand they were built in the factory which later became Fender Japan. Apart from the basswood body and ceramic pickups (both of which have now gone) it was every bit as good as USA ones I've owned.

I've picked up recent Squier Teles in music stores and they've been awful, but I do like the look of the Custom II, especially for the price.

This whole discussion is sooooo funny!!! I bought my son an Epi SG Special for his first guitar - bolt-on neck, 2 open-coil "humbuckers", 2 knobs, no pickguard. I actually liked this guitar, as it kinda reminded me of the Gibson SG I had in the early 70's. Well, the pickups kept on falling into the body (I couldn't get them to stay at playing height). Finally, it fell over and the head broke off :-)

I then bought him a Squier Strat, but he didn't really like it that much. He later bought a nice Epi Korina Flying V, which he finally traded in for his present axe, a beautiful Epi Elitist '61 reissue faded SG. This guitar looked and played better (and was possibly built better) than the nearly identical Gibby '61 reissue hanging next to it (for a few hundred dollars more).

It was mentioned earlier that many well-known guitarists started on cheap, junky guitars. You know, some of the greatest old-time blues men and rock'n'roll guitar idols started out playing on guitars made from a cigar box. Don't believe me? Check this out:
