Old Epi forum...

Remember how great it was for info and having fun talking guitars? Despite it's obvious technical issues of course. But what a wealth of information those posters built up in the years of contribution.

There was a mass-exodus of long-time members sometime in August for a variety of reasons, primarily due to the over-moderation that was occurring at the time. To my knowledge many of them don't read the contents of this forum much anymore.

I come back here a lot because there seems to be so much more activity here than the new forum.

sometimes I think everyone there knows as much as I do and you can't help much.. and so the conversation seems to lag.

I like it though, too!

Yeah, there were several that were banned that were very knowledgeable people. Others just left because of the reasons Roswell stated. Too bad. I agree about the great threads on the old Epiphone forum. (Pprior to January of 2008) There were some glitches on that forum, technical, but some great info. To bad it was lost when this forum was started. I did bookmark some of the threads from the old forum, but they are no longer available, Epi shut it down totally. Some of the guys on the Amp forum put together a sticky with some great info that was gleaned on the old forum. It didn't happen here though.

I wasn't around for the "old forum" but how does a format change things? I understand that the people leaving have an effect on change, but it seems you are referring to it in the context of format.

As for the things that are going on here. IMO, you let a few get the better of you and in a small way that is a victory in their minds.

The forum appears ruined because in a way you let them ruin it.

I now have a better understanding of the departures that took place back then and now it appears it might be repeating.

The few actually caused the others to fight amongst themselves when they should have banned together to beat down the crap - that's what self policing is all about.

The forums main thrust these past couple of weeks has been a series of personal attacks and name calling. Arguing over guitars and amps is cool, what we've seen lately isn't.

Marx stated you need to be thick skinned (or something along those lines) on these forums, but that should be when arguing with someone about guitars and gear.

I think we have the reason a lot have left. :D

Me, I come here all the time, even though the forum suffers, along with the rest of the internet, from the facility with which impaired persons can parade their problems for the education and pity of the rest of us. I have even contributed one small thing on rewiring a Sheraton, which I will send to anyone who asks for it.

But others have shared much information about the history of Epi (carverman comes immediately to mind) and have identified obscure models and pointed out intriguing facts about both the "historic" (pre-Gibson) models and the subsequent captive brand, in its US-made and Asian-made incarnations.

And I don't even own an Epiphone any more...I've had two, a Biscuit resonator and a Sheraton II (the first was replaced by a lovely late '30s Regal spider bridge the latest folkie instrument dealer dug up somewhere, the second by a Gibson ES-335 I stumbled into for a bargain price). This last is no dig at Epiphone: as I have remarked before, Epi shares with Gibson the wonderful guitar forms developed during Ted McCarty's tenure, and the ones I have owned have been stone bargains, well made and playable.

Being one of the "old" members who left for the new forum (and come to think of it, the one who brought on the "mass exodus" as Ros puts it) I feel the need to comment.

We left mainly for the reasons Ros listed, and many of us rarely visit back here, including myself. I've noticed just from the few times I've checked back here that some of the older members haven't joined the new forum, and a couple frequent both.

I was unaware of a format change, but it was most likely due in part to the creation of the new forum. So I think the loss of older members had more to do with the new place rather than a format change.

I was referring to the "Old" Epi forum, the one that looked like this from 200 years ago.

Truth be told the only time I had troubles logging on in the old forum was towards the tail end of it, right before it changed to this. Long before that however never had any issues at all though.

Definitely lots of good info on it, but hey..new forum, new lies...I mean tales #-o

Hey folks - rather than lament the 'good old days', I'd suggest we all enjoy what we have now. In a few years , THESE will be the good old days! We have at least several forum options at least now so we are fortunate. There will always be disruptive elements around.

My suggestion is to follow the old addage - "don't feed the trolls" - Ignore them and they will go away. The most recent occurrance is pretty easy to spot. I mean half the time he is hardly even coherent. The only reason people like this have any success is because people (self included) respond to them. I am sort of surprised some sort of moderator intervention was not evident though...

For the most part the folks here are great with lots of knowledge, information, and yes - opinions to share. Just because they are not in alignment with our personal opinions does not make them wrong.

We need to realize that the very anonanimity of electronic media seems to breed an 'abruptness' in approach. Also innocuous comments can VERY easily be misinterpreted without those very important non-verbal cues we are used to in a face to face conversation.

So don't throw the baby out with the bathwater - drown a troll instead....=D> and - please hang around ....

We sometimes had the same problems on the old forum as we do here. Every once in a while some wanker would crash our party, bashing Epi and praising other brands and just trying to get under everyones skin.

I personally prefer the new forum. With the old forum there would sometimes be times that you couldn't log in for days at a time. I'll take this anyday.

Indeed !!!! Am not a frequent contributor to either, but...... there's much to be learned from both (and many others, too, for that matter). I'm quite pleased with both of my Epi's ..... I pledge no allegiance to any brand, website, etc, etc.

I likes what I likes ....... fwiw, Epiphone should either do away with these "smilies" or offer a decent selection..... where's the simple smile ??? .... where's the simple wink ??? These "smilies" bite [-o<

Upon looking up our main"problem childs" profile, it seems he must have been booted, then came back in under a

slightly changed s/n.(possibly booted again ?)

Its listed that he joined yesterday........posted once(which thankfully the moderator edited) and was gone.
