Hi guys, jus recently got my metal pedal the um300 ultra metal by behringer and wanted to get a good mettalica sound from it. All of the setting i try are very good sounding but struggling to nail there sound.

Most of you prob dont have this pedal but its similar to the boss metal zone apparently if that helps =D>

If knowone can help with the pedal then just general metal settings for a metallica type sound. Lots of people talk about scooping the mids and the low end high ect. Can anyone help.? There are controls on the pedal for

Distortion

Low

Mids

High

Mid Frequency control (200-5K)

Level

Mine is set at the minute like

Distortion 9 o'clock (Quite low but any more and i sounds more like pantera)

Low 2 o'clock

Mids 12 o'clock

High 12 o'clock

Mid frequency control 12o'clock

level N/A

Thanks guys

Also thanks for help in the past with my speaker cab help. Cant get it now as just spend £270 on my car brakes yesterday so its gonna have to wait for another day.

Metal tone recipe....

Ingredients:

- amps, any high wattage solid state amp - higher the better - 2 or 3 driving a Soldano or Mesa is killer

- pedals, lots of 'em daisy chained and loop-d-looped - heck give the drummer one to stomp also

- speakers, stacks and stacks of busted, burned, spike-nail ripped coned to full blown

- guitars, nah axes they carry axes and clank chains and bind themselves with tight leather 'til it hurts..., otherwise how would these middle-upper class hipsters hope to know about or manage to convey angst to an audience?

Plug in the axes, roll every knob on every amp and on every pedal to full tilt. Station your frontman by the garage circuit main breaker. With your right arm raised high in the air (left if you're a southpaw) your signal for power on and everyone to commence thrashing is your downward arm motion as you crash into one of your 2, or is it 3, known power chords in the key of... key?... you mean the thingy that you bash the strings with? Ah but I digress.

If the garage doors stayed on their hinges, you are failures as a metal band. Either re-set and add more kilowattage of solid state amplitude until either you succeed or are forced to go find day jobs to buy beer -- hock some of your piercings for gas money to beat the mean streets in your search.

Some like it..., then again name anything besides your wife or mother that doesn't sound good after you've downed more of these than it takes to float Canadian lumber from Alberta to... anywhere.

Oh yeah, I think my reply falls under your "general metal help" category.

I don't think you're going to be able to nail a tone that relies upon racks of gear, including multiple high powered amps, with a pedal and a valve jr. You'd probably have better luck getting that type of tone with just amp modelers, frankly.

However, based upon what you've got, you could start by scooping the mids, like others have suggested. Typical metal-esque tones involve HEAVY bass and VERY LITTLE mids. Why are your lows set to 2 and your mids set to noon? Kick up the lows, drop the mids, and play with that mid freq. control to dial in what Q point of mids is being scooped out.

I'd go with what M said. Turn up the lows and scoop the mids. Alltho early Metallica was more of a JCM800 tone IIRC.

Don't forget to stroke down those riffs and use copious amounts of palm-muting... :-)

Let's see if I can help you out. I've got a Boss Metal Zone, I show you what my settings are. Set level and distortion can be set to your own likingm Ive got the level on 25% (9 o 'clock), distortion around 1 o'clock. The highs are fully open (100%), the low is slightly before 3 o'clock. Middle is 0%, Middle frequency 100% (fully open).

Jeez, any chance you could be more of a snob? Cripes, the guy just wants some help. Oh yeah, the only good music is what YOU like. Man, to know it all like you sure must be a burdon.=D>

Anyway, rule of thumb is scoop the mids, raise the lows and highs. Adjust to your liking and there you go. Thats a start. Happy New Year folks!!!=D>/

+1 the metal sound is NOT everything dimed out either Steven! I'm not familiar with your pedal but to really tweek the tones you might find an eq pedal very helpful instead of just the high mid low controls on the pedal. Small amps in general have a hard time with a really big powerful bottom end thump. Best of luck and Happy New Year!

Thanks for your help guys.

When my pedals has the highs up it sounds horrible but sounds good at 12 oclock. Apparently this is the only flaw people agree on with this pedal. (Harmony central reviews say unusable highs when turned up past 12!) I agree.

I have turned the lows up and i def need a bigger cabinet as the bass response from this pedal is awesome gives a great thumbing bass which isnt muddy at all. (Using the valve junior combo so doesnt handle the bass great at higher volumes)

The mids are almost turned of but not fully as you lose your tone and is sounds crap again. The frequency control sounds good from 12 oclock till max.

Still keeping distortion at about 25% other wise seems to turn into pantera type metal. (More SS amp sounding type metal) I always thought metallica sounded a warm sound for metal.

When I'm in the mood for DEATH METAL - I use a Roland 25 year old SS 50-watter with a Korg M.E. Pedal - sometimes throwing a BIG MUFF PI in the mix too. SS amps sound more METAL to me.

Uuumph aahum…, a bit of humour Guy & layboomo…, to start your new year with a touch of spice and to offset how bland it has become around here of late. B)

....or did metal become some sacred cow down your way while I was busy entertaining/reveling intro to 2009? Go on and enjoy your hangover Bowls everyone as undoubtedly the OP (British humored ol’ chap) was not misled or harmed in anyway by my metal tone tips.

Not helpful but funny none the the less!!

I agree with some of it! I reakon Metallica are one of few metal bands that have some warmth and tone to their sound which is why i like there music and there stuff is classic alot of other metal bands seem to sound very SS sounding high pitched fizzy sound which lacks class of the older stuff.

Maybe i just dont like the numetal sound and im comparing the two? My thing is classic rock from the 70's and 80's and some classic metal too from the 80's. Also cant forget the blues!

Give me the sounds of;

Van Halen

Guns'n'Roses

Deep Purple

Metallica

AC-DC

Clapton

Gary Moore

Europe

Black Sabbath
